Not much can be done about that.

Is that true?

I'm not being a jerk or facetious. Surely console developers had this problem since consoles were created. Is there really no automated way to determine if save games are incompatible?

I'm genuinely curious. Also, if there is even an answer, I'm pretty sure this the responsibility of console developers (EDIT: or possibly game engine developers), and not of TFP.

Well... since an old version of the game can't know if the new version will be compatible, the game can't determine compatibility until you upgrade it and by then it's too late since you can't downgrade on console.  Besides notifications like I had suggested, I'm not sure how it can work.  Usually a game on console is complete (gold) and so you don't normally have to deal with save breaking updates.  But this game is still in development and so has this kind of problem.

I do agree that console manufacturers should have something in place to handle this kind of thing.  Something as simple as a flag that can be set by a developer when pushing an update to a game, that when set will warn users automatically that the saves will be broken with the update.  That would be very easy to implement on the manufacturer side and easy for a developer to set, but I don't know that anything like that has ever been put in place by any console developers.  Maybe?
