Windows USB Installer (or solid way to move the save files)

Hello All,

Looking for a good way to ether install the game on a USB ssd drive and have the save/game operate on this device between two computers running the same OS (Versions may be different, the game will not jump from windows to linux).

I have run into problems moving the game from computer to computer. For me generally the game gets corrupted when a character switches chunks after a few moves (the new file is created and my character gets stuck between "worlds/clipping" loosing the progression).

Does anybody have any experience installing the game on an external SSD and operate smoothly?
Or moving the save files between computers with out corruption? (This seems like it happens eventually even with backups, i can get a few moves before the progress is wiped)

You could install it to an external drive if you wanted, but you can also just set the User Data Folder to your USB drive and have your saves go there. You can easily set your user data folder to any location you want by right clicking the game in Steam and going to Properties. On the first tab (General), there is a text box for launch options. Type in something like: "-UserDataFolder=G:\Saves\7D2D" and it will use that location for your saves, worlds, mods, etc. Be aware that it will not move existing files there, so you'll need to do that yourself. All future saves or RWG maps will get placed there automatically after making that change. For mods, you'll need to put them there yourself when installing them. Be sure you do this on both computers.

Note that the drive letter may be different on each computer. Also, drive letters can sometimes change for external drives, so you may need to update the letter occasionally if you try to load a game and it isn't found.

As far as whether or not the game will perform well if you install it on an external drive rather than just putting your saves there, that will depend mostly on the type of connection the drive uses. What version of USB is used, or if it uses SATA instead, for example. If the speed is fast enough, it can probably work fine on an external SSD, but I think you'll still be better off just putting the saves on the external drive.

As far as potential corruption of saves on an external drive, that normally shouldn't be a problem if you set it as your user data folder location. However, if you have a really slow connection to that external drive (such as a USB 2.x connection), it is possible that the slow speed may cause problems. I've never tried, so I can't say for certain. But a better connection should not be a problem. Also remember that if you don't have the same mods (and same mod versions) installed on both computers, that can corrupt your saves.

Your other option is to just use a backup program to copy the saves to your external drive and back or else do it manually. You can then just have the saves you're using in the default location in %appdata% on each computer, but move them back and forth as needed. That won't lead to corruption as long as you're copying the entire save each time, but it isn't very convenient.
