Unpowered 5x3 Garage doors in Survival

I was playing around in Creative on how to design a base I wanted to make in survival, just trying out various ideas. I saw tons of 5x3 garage doors, both powered and unpowered, but was disappointed to see that there are no unpowered 5x3 garage doors in vanilla survival. The only options are powered. Is there any reason why the unpowered 5x3s are in creative, but not allowed to be built in survival? Seems like wiring up powered doors is a very mid-late game stage, however I'd love to be able to use one for early game vehicles.

Just a thought - not sure if its a big deal to implement, or if anyone else even misses them in survival mode.

Agree

There is the Roll Up Door 5x4 craftable at the Workbench in vanilla survival. It is basically a garage door, unpowered, of similar size. It also comes in 3x3 and 7x4. I use this for my garage door. :)

The reason is the same why in real life they usually don't make huge gates that can only be opened and closed manually: because they're heavy and cumbersome as f**k to be handled just manually.

Do you see many (modern) huge gates that open manually in the real world?
Do I see manual drawbridges in the real world? .. not really. Somehow they've made it into the game. 5x3 garage doors seem rather flimsy in comparison. 5m wide manual doors.. I've seen a few airplane hangars; although those were made of about 4m sections... but enough total width to park 3 fighter jets side by side, fully manual operation.

Fair point. Drawbridges are an exception, though I wouldn't categorize them really as doors, but more like... ehrm... bridges? :sneaky:

As for the so called garage doors, I don't know if you're a truck driver or something, but where I live most garage doors are 3x2, so they can handily be opened manually. Bigger overhead doors (5x3) are usually used as entrance (e.g.) to a condo parking and, as I said, are most of the time automatic and they often are also of the "sectional" type (rollup).

As for hangars, well, that is more reasonable, since it's true that aviation hangar doors are sometimes huge and, as far as I know, manually opened "on rails".

In ant case my point is that in vanilla you can usually (not always) expect more common sense than what you see in mods.

What I meant is that TFP have simply replicated gate and doors that we find in real life.
Do you see many (modern) huge gates that open manually in the real world? ... Didn't think so. ;)
The largest door in the game (a roll up door) is manual. They don't offer a powered version, which is why I modded a powered version into the game. Granted, a roll up door uses a chain system, which helps with raising it, but even so, I don't see any reason why that can be unpowered but a smaller door can't be unpowered. In the end, I doubt TFP did it for any kind of realism and instead just picked doors to make crafted and left the rest only in CM. There are a LOT of doors in CM that can't be crafted and I doubt there is any real reason why. Some things in CM that you can't craft are that way because they create performance issues if too many are placed in a small area, but I doubt most doors create that problem, and probably none of them. So why can't we craft them? I really don't think there's any actual reason.

And if we're going to discuss powered versus unpowered options, why can't we manually open powered doors? Why do we even need both powered and unpowered? Just make it so that if you don't power the door, it requires manually opening it and if you power it, then it can be opened automatically as well as manually. That solves the issue with running out of fuel and your doors not working, requiring you to have another manual door access if you want to avoid problems with that. And it's realistic. Most, perhaps all, powered doors have the ability to be opened manually in case of power failure.

I didn't say they did it for any kind of "realism", I said they just did the simpler thing and put in the game whatever works in real life.
CM is not the game, the game is what you see when you play, and that's what they chose to put in.

And if we're going to discuss powered versus unpowered options, why can't we manually open powered doors?
Because <insert technical reason here>?
