PC underground collapses?

Loving Alpha 17 so far except zombies dmg to the structures :( no reason to build a horde base because they will just destroy it very fast. However, my question is about collapses underground. Is it still a thing? 25X25 room and remove the bottom layer will or will not collapse the room?

Thank you!

It's more a thing now than previous alphas. Sand can & will fall on your head even in a 1-wide tunnel; shore as you go.

-- Also applies to the Ore Deposits throughout the world.

-- For shoring I place Wood Plates on the side. Just the upper block. Allows you to walk on past them so no need to dig out additional blocks if all you're after is a 1x2 tunnel.

Never tried a 25x25 before, not even close. I generally build on a 7x7 layout with supports in each corner.

I did check Sandstone in a17, dug a 7x8 without it collapsing. Didn't continue past that to find out where it would give way.

(Sandstone is below the Sand layer in the desert; the one that gives Sand & Stone but you still use a shovel on)

25x25 shouldn't work.

If you look at the SI stats on Stone, truthfully you should have support every 7 blocks.

[support, then five spaces, then another suppport]

That's with one layer of block above

That changes slightly with 3 layers [after that doesn't matter.]

If you're looking to build underground might I suggest making a test game.

Build in creative with stone and see what it takes to make it fail.

This is how I cam up with the design of having a support column, five spaces, and another column.

Never a single collapse even with a very large build above.

At least this answers my question about how people are getting so many collapses in A17.

I think it's a lot more accurate as far the the SI stats go than A16.

In other words, it's working as intended.... I suppose?!?!?!

If you want something larger and don't mind modding in some stuff try adding a recipe for

Riveted Bridge Metal

Bridge Concrete

Either of those will give you the longest span while supporting the most weight.

This might help

The stats are still the same for those blocks.

So, truthfully every 6 blocks? ;]

Otheres answered the SI questions, but you can indeed build horde bases that stand. You just gotta build smaller, with a lot of spikes. Just survived day 21 horde with nightmare-speed zombies, increased spawn on Warrior. Barely lost any spikes with one cobblestone wall surrounding level 1-iron upgraded wooden shack core.

^Taken after all the spawning was done. Survived a few cops and a cpl rads, too.

When players say creative, do they just mean activate dm on console? Or is there really a creative option when you start a new game?

There used to be a creative mode, but Im not sure if its there. "Cheats:On ; Spawning: Off" does the same thing though.

So, truthfully every 6 blocks? ;]
Or every seven for me as I make my pillars 2x2.

So long as people get what I'm saying.

Dm + Cm .... or whatever method you prefer.

I don't even know if there's still Creative as I've never bothered to try it.
