Tool smithing not working

Hey, just got the game.

Spent the whole night making clubs, like I saw on a lets play, and the tool making skill hadn't changed one bit. What gives?

 
You must have been watching an old vid. They took the grind out a while ago. You get exp by actually playing, and then spend skill points to level your skills up.
