PC thoughts on the way forests are turning out

I have seen a lot of new screenshots of the trees, and I have to say, they look beautiful. Right now, in the game moe of the forests have realively few tress and they are short and squat. There is nothing wrong with this, but I would also like to see a more dense forest filled with thinner, taller trees with less foliage. If you notice, this is the actual forest that is advertised in the game's concept art. Take a look at the "New Live Oak Tree" screenshot and then look at the trees in the background of the fourms; they should be very different. I don't know what TFP want the forest biome to feel like, but I can say as of right now, they are not oppressive or-fear-inducing.

If it comes down to prettier trees vs. more trees, I'll pick more trees every time

 
Yes. I would like to see at least some section of the forest (not all of it) looking like the background of this forum. A bunch of super tall trees with mostly leaves on the ground. Give it a real "haunted/dead" look. It could be reminiscent of the old burnt forest.

No, that's an editable xml limit.

My southern spooky forest in medieval mod is packed tight, has the right ambiance, and performs okay.

 
The limit was increased in like A12 or so because it looked absurd and ran like crap when someone would plant a 100x100 block of pure trees lmao

we had to limit trees to 10x10 in a16 on my 3 servers because of the lag it would bring in 16. Before 16, ppl had stupid plot sizes like that 100x100 you are talking about.

 
More trees > pretty trees agreed.
But

More zombies > More trees
I think that 1 of the reasons why the changed tree models is to increase performance for the distant trees. So maybe they don't throw in too many of them for that?

So despite I agree with your scheme, I would also like to add

Wurm unlimited has some of the best forests I've seen. Actually got lost and turned around before. Even died because I fell down a mountain I didn't see. More isn't ALWAYS better. :D

 
First thing I did when I was tweaking my biomes/rwgmixer was to turn the Forest Biome into "Woodland" and the Pine Forest into "Deep Forest" (with spawning mushrooms). No performance issues there, even if I literally couldn't see the forest before the trees.

Going over a hill usually gives my game the stutters because of LOS, not tight packed prefabs and blocks.

I thought it was because people would make tree walls and at the time zeds didn't attack them. Hm.

Medi mod's spooky forest below.





each of the tfp pines I think clock in around 7000 tri's each.

After being around the super smart modders in medi/starvation you get inspired.

like the OP I wanted the BG from the forums.





It can be done but as roland said, you either get pretty trees, or lots of trees.
