PC Theoretical horde base

So Iآ’ve been thinking about horde bases for a18, and Iآ’ve thought of a new(atleast new to me) design. I want to see if anyone has built a similar base and if so, how well it has faired.

I call it, the chimney defense.

Picture a 3x3 tower, that is 20-30 blocks tall, preferably made of concrete or steel. In the center of the tower is a ladder that runs roughly 3/4 up to the top. You stand on the top of the tower and shoot down, as zombies climb the ladder and stop just short of the top. Since you are directly over the zombies, you should be able to get headshots almost 100% of the time, reducing wasted shots. Plus, dropping the new frag grenades down the hole should work too. Perhaps at the base of the tower there could be a hole below the tower to collect the loot bags. And electric fences running through the middle to slow them down.

While it may not be the most efficient way to survive, the idea behind it is to harvest as much xp as possible with minimal amount bullets & grenades.

Anyone build something similar? And if so how did it work?

I expect the grenades would break the ladder, zombies also just swing at random sometimes and with only one ladder it'd probably get busted pretty fast. I'd be concerned that they'd then rapidly move on to disassembling the tower base leaving you to a long fall.

thinking of a similar design - a series of bays each with a chimney down which you can drop a grenade.

imagine 3 x 3 set of squares(bays) with the middle one almost solid concrete (has access up in the middle).

the outer ring of bays have a wall between each but open to the world around them on the outsides. on top of all of it a cage floor and roof and walls (something to hide behind from spitters) each outer bay has a hole to drop a grenade etc down with a directional chute to land inside the bay exactly where you want it - just far enough from the walls to not damage them? maybe a double row high and deep of spikes against the walls to lower base damage and provide a buffer.

concentrate them up and drop the bombs with perfect precision.

lol! if we ever get a working camera/monitor system, you could set the hole up under a monitor. one for you, one for you, ooo - two for you.

The grenades seem to be causing mostly entity damage. An iron ladder or a steel ladder should withstand this without any problems. It is more likely that the zombies will damage the ladder and then have no way up.

Yes, made a two base like this, one above and one underground.

This is the underground base situated at bedrock. First picture shows the base after a horde night, with a hole at the farther wall were water drops out (because I made a moat on the surface to slow them and the zombies dug into that moat). The second picture shows a side of the cage tower with iron ladder to our cage, we had two such entrances on opposite sides of the tower, but the zombies used mostly only one of them.

The zombies were supposed to fall down or climb down the ladders on the chasm wall. Most of them dug to the height of our cage in the middle, then used the ladders down the wall and then the ladders up to our cage. I did not have time to adapt the base to account for the digging, we switched to a new experimental. But it worked well this way too, so can't complain really. It was great fun and we got lost of headshots but also many free shots of zombies on indecisive zombies on the wall ladders. And the blade traps on the bottom were effective too.

The last picture is of the above ground horde base (center, the right thing was our megalomaniac crafting base. Made for no reason, just because we could :cocksure: .

Important for the horde base was to use the strongest ladders and provide multiple ladders some way up. Not easy to see at this resolution but there are 3 ladders a third of the way up. Because zombies stuck below other zombies tended to hit on the ladders.

Zombies were pretty fast on the ladders, so expect some zombies to reach and hit you from time to time, but most of the time they jojoed up and down. Again headshots were fairly easy and satisfying, I really loved that base. We never put a safety hatch on top because we were 4, our concentrated fire could keep them from exiting the ladder. Possibly you can hinder them to exit the ladder simply by standing on it, but be prepared for hits (iron armor might be good idea).

We eventually used electric wire on the way up too, absolutely recommended. I also built an alternative way up on the side of the tower so even if they cut all ladders in the front they would then choose the ladders on the side.

For dropping molotovs into the court yard I also built a small hanging platform so it would be away from the ladder. Sadly molotovs were still too good at putting yourself at fire and wasn't used much.

A small design problem was that I didn't put enough space between the front ladders and the side so that the zombies could jump on the lower platform. Had to adapt the design because of this, next time I would make the tower a bit wider from the start.
