The Race For The Forge

Lax

Survivor
Just started a new playthrough and noticed that once I get the forge, survival becomes much more manageable.

From the forge I get a cooking pot, jars, grill, forged iron, bucket for water, better iron arrows for bow.

Anyone else feel like the forge is key to you moving from desperation to settling in? Or maybe it's the workbench or wrench for you?

"Desperation" is rather strong; but yeh. For me, the fact that there's a workstation right around the corner that solves survival kinda takes out any pressure even from day 1. You might get thirsty / hungry before you get a forge, but it doesn't feel pressing as you won't really suffer for it, and you know it won't be for long anyway.

Just looting for most of those items works fine for me. Forge is a great help but no priority for me untill I need steel in bulk. Cooking is more important.

After a couple of times where I had poor luck finding a cooking pot early... I gave up trying. Now I just do a couple of quests and buy a cooking pot on day 1

I tend to agree, the forge is my first benchmark in game. Rather than RNGing a Cooking Pot, I tend to put more effort into those first 5 Forge Ahead magazines to guarantee a cooking pot and set myself a firm foundation for early game. I won't turn down a Cooking Pot if I find one, but it can wait a little while.

I usually only build the forge and the workbench when i want to craft the minibike/ as its the first time they become needed.
I get my food and water from traders/looting so the cooking pot, jars, grill and bucket for water are all useless to me for basically the entire game. Jars only become useful around level 60 when i start to need hundreds of glue/tape for rocket production.

I don't think I have ever crafted a pot... or jars, or grill, or bucket, or arrows. So, um.... not really? :D

The forge for me is just for forged iron and steel, neither of which are that important early in the game. Still, I do tend to get a forge pretty quickly anyhow.

I make it a priority to find a cooking pot in a house or restaurant on Day 1 or 2. The forge can wait a little while.
Agreed, if you don't secure a way to cook water, the forge is irrelevant. I usually find a cooking pot day 1. That is essentially my entire priority. Once I do that I move towards the trader. Forge wise, my goal is to get it by day 7. I typically can't craft metal tools until around that time frame, and that is the primary need I have for the forge. Most weapons I find. I go with Spear for main, and I always find spear parts WAY before I can use them in crafting.

I haven't gotten the forge before a cooking pot in years, so I never worry about crafting one.

Not even for your second and/or third fireplace? I usually find or buy my first pot but then craft the second.

wow...we agree on something.
I just pick a bunch of flowers right off the hop. Get goldenrod and chrysanthemum checked off the list. 100 chrysanthemum is worth 600 dukes...there's your pot. 100 goldenrod is only worth 200. I usually find myself spawned in in a place that is fairly loaded with both of them and cotton...hog heaven. lol

Nope. It is rare that I have trouble finding them. They are very common in residential kitchens. I think I bought one once, only to find one within about 15 minutes after that. I only need one. After that, it's not really a rush to have more, so I get them when I get them. The same for grills.

I guess the main difference is, I only ever carry home exactly the first one; and scrap the rest I find. Thus if I need more for additional campfires or chemstations, I need to craft them.

If you never craft, you must be carrying them home; some people choose to do that, but it's a waste of perfectly fine inventory slots ;)

Not really a big deal. If I need the space for something else, I can just drop them or even leave them in a crate (I don't do that, but it's an option). It has never been an issue. And as I said, after the first, there's no rush for more. If I have to skip one because I need something else instead in that inventory slot, it doesn't make any real difference. I'll just grab the next one I find. As I said, they are common.

This is true; both ways. I'm not often strapped for that one slot, either; but the loss is what, 8 scrap iron? I just scrap on sight and I don't need to think if I might have a use for one - I got plenty of iron at home in the forge already ;)

I have the absolutely worst luck trying to find a cooking pot, so I just started crafting them since the forge components are pretty easy to come by.

I suppose. But it's one thing I don't even have to think about. I just find it and go. Heh. I generally don't craft anything that's really easy to find, regardless of cost.

It depends

For base survival you need a cooking pot and grill

For advance survival you need a workbench and the wrench to get those materials

Forge is number 1 for me in both in game and irl
