Suggestion: Use Land Claim Blocks as Safe Zones to Preserve Player Progress During Major Updates

Hello developers and community,

I have been playing 7 Days to Die for many years and love how the game has evolved. However, one of the biggest frustrations for many players is that with every major update, our saves often become incompatible. This forces us to start completely over, losing hundreds of hours of progress.

I have an idea that could solve this problem while still allowing new features to work with future updates:

🟢

  • Treat the Land Claim Block as a safe zone during updates.
  • Everything inside the radius of the claim block (your base, chests, crafting stations, and items) stays exactly the same.
  • Everything outside the claim block is regenerated to fit the new version (new POIs, biomes, mechanics, etc.).

🎯

  • Players keep their hard work: No more losing bases and progress.
  • Devs can still introduce new content: The world around players updates as intended.
  • Easy to understand: If it’s inside your claim, it’s safe. If not, it resets.

✅

  • It encourages players to secure their builds and progress properly.
  • It minimizes frustration and keeps long-time players engaged.
  • It provides a smooth transition for updates without wiping everything.

I believe this system would make future updates (like 3.0 and beyond) much more enjoyable and fair for the community. It also aligns with how other games (like Minecraft) handle world updates while preserving existing builds.

Thank you for reading my suggestion! I hope the dev team considers this idea because it could greatly improve the experience for all players.

First, suggestions should be in Pimp Dreams, not in support. Second, your suggestion wouldn't really work. The issue with major updates are the many changes to code. It isn't about saving a specific place on the map from being corrupted in an update. It is about the many changes that are not compatible with old saves. It isn't just about the map.

However, they could add an option to export a land claim are as a POI that you could import into a new map. However, that may not be possible on console, and even on PC, that doesn't mean it will be compatible with future versions without being updated just like you have to do sometimes with other POI due to block changes or removal. That rarely happens to player blocks, so add long as you aren't using the creative menu, that should not normally be a problem.

They could also add a way to export a player and import them into other games, which has been requested before.

But in both cases, a new save will likely still be required.

Keep in mind that there are only 2 more major updates remaining, though. And if you plan for those, they won't really be a problem

I agree with the OP that the constant invalidating of saves is a huge problem and one of the big reasons why I dont play newer versions more often. I disagree about the way to go about it tho as it would just not work. For the saves to be compatible, first the devs need to stop rewriting the entire game every update and changing core mechanics, then we might get some continuity like in Minecraft, where the updates dont really matter unless you want to make a new map, and even then you can just update your current map for the new rules. Until the game stabilizes, there is not much to be done about it.
