Storm-chaser Book Series

Jost Amman

Hunter
I was thinking that since we have this new game survival element (Storms) that we should also have a book series for that.

I was thinking something like this (throwing around random ideas):
  • Storm Survivalist: get 10% less damage from storms
  • Storm Preparedness: get the storm warning 1 minute before than standard
  • Storm Chaser: move 10% faster during storms
  • Storm Scavenger: your Loot-stage is doubled during storms, but only for containers opened outside
  • Storm Veteran: do 10% more damage to zombies during a storm
  • Storm Driver: you can compensate the negative effects the storms have on your vehicles
Completion bonus: you can craft special clothing that gives you 50% protection from storm damage.

Does it sound like something that could be added to vanilla, or do you think this would be too OP?

I like it. It would also be interesting to see a challenge for storms. Maybe something basic like just staying outside in storms for a certain amount of time. Just a way to get people to learn that it's not the end of the world to be out in a storm.

I like pretty much anything that uses the storms as a vehicle for inherent danger,
but I also don't want direct circumvention, unless a player take the option and turns
it off. TFP has been overly generous in a lot of the buffs, I can see that for mass appeal.
There is a bit that I would instantly tweak, if this were enacted.

  • Storm Preparedness: get the storm warning 1 minute before than standard

1 keep
2 keep but the red signs, siren, and counter kind of allow me enough preparedness.
I play with storms, sometimes finding routes between them to get to the other side of the map.
Play hokey pokey with them. Drive straight in and fight, in and out of pois. Storms are my new
fun mechanic.
3 I would remove that or probably change it to something like, Headshot only during storms,
or melee only, I love the balance of knives and stamina use. And would add the vultures as
attackers during storm. They should not all be gimmes for some play balance.
4 I could foresee people doing burnt biome storms constantly to get wasteland bonus. That is a bit OP.
5 This one I would keep if I changed number 3.
6 Keep for drivers I guess, I ride my bike in as far as I can go and pick it up then plan how I am gonna
survive, that round.

But overall I like the thought process.

Yes. The reason I mentioned them is because, they posted that storms don't adversely
affect zombies or animals. Also because vultures use to be the true terror of the desert.
Now you have to be hurt, badly for them to attack. Or and this may have been a fluke
I ate some tuna toast and a flock of six of them spawned attacking me, Like seagulls after
my fries.

The loot increase is an imbalance. During a storm, the chance of a loot bag dropping is already increased—that's enough. But the damage reduction and increased vehicle handling are interesting. However, the book series shouldn't negate all the inconveniences of the storm; it should simply mitigate them.

Yeah, double lootstage was just spitballing, butloot bags are a different thing.
My idea is to incentivize going around in the open during a storm to looting containers.
Maybe just a +10/+20 lootstage increase could be enough.

However, the book series shouldn't negate all the inconveniences of the storm; it should simply mitigate them.
I agree. But none of the perks you get from my proposed list negate anything.

So I misunderstood
No, but I wasn't perfectly clear. By "compensate" I meant more like you decrease the negative effect so you can drive a little better during the storm. By how much? Since it's all just hypothetical, it doesn't really matter unless they add it to the game.

Honestly, I'd be fine with it removing all effects when driving. Driving is just a way to get from point A to point B. It doesn't really matter that much if it's removed. Some people might not bother putting enough points into it to remove it, while others will, requiring them to not put points into something else. I think that's fine. Damage shouldn't be completely negated, though.

I understand, but we're talking about book series here... there's no "putting points there". 🥴

It's a cool idea, but I personally lean more towards simulation than arcade. This for me seems to be more in line with an arcade game. I'd rather protect from storms with actual PPE, like goggles, trench coat, respirator, etc...
