Steel crossbow bolts or iron?

Is it a question of resources? If i have enough to craft both it´s steel ofc. Why would you make iron ones if you can make the steel ones?

There's no reason to pick iron over steel; if you only have 1 steel bolt, you use that until it breaks, hoping for more.

No it's not a question of resources. Steel doesn't seem to be that much better. I see what you mean, you may as well even if it's only slightly better

I honestly can't recall if I've ever made steel bolts. I'm sure I have, but it's been a while.

Never really seen a need for them. Iron bolts can 1-shot stealth kill pretty much everything, and I'm not using the bow/crossbow out of stealth beyond early game.

I use stone and upgrade my stealth and sneak damage. Once I have 2 levels in each and an iron crossbow and a 2x scope I can one shot cops easily. I really dont see a point spending resources like iron or steel on ammo.

I switch to steel when I can. I seem to loot more than I lose. I'll make like one batch of bolts and they last a long time. I do make sure to try and retrieve them all, and I do spec into archery.

Crossbow is a stealth weapon. Once you multiply your sneak attack damage by 7 that difference is bigger. Can make the difference between one shotting or not.

@warmer That´s not happening on survivalist difficulty. There the difference can matter.

Once you put a pount or 2 in mining perk and wear 2 or 3 mining gear, iron ore flows like water. At that point forged iron and steel are trivial.

Also a resource consideration - I think the steel arrows are basically unbreakable. I have no numbers, but that's how it feels like. If I had to guess , irons break somewhere between 1/2 and 1/3, steels somewhere around 1/5 to 1/10. They cost twice as much as iron, but they seem to break way less; you'll prolly get more "uses per iron ore" from the steel.

Horses for Courses, For day to day use Iron seems more than sufficient. For a mid game stealth run maybe? A silenced rifle does better in end game...

Huh? They're a fairly decent damage boost and also feature armor penetration; without the latter, bows and crossbows would fall off harder than they already do in 2.0.

And I might be wrong, but I also thought that steel arrows/bolts were armor piercing too, meaning that they go through at least 1 zombie and hit another, providing they are aligned properly.

Haven't checked in A23, but afaik they do have armor penetration, but not target piercing. The mechanic of them getting stuck in the sleeper zed would be them getting stuck in the wall behind. But they do more dmg to bikers etc.
