PC Sorry... But where does RWG stand now? B240

I've tried to search for the experiences and bugs people are having but I can't seem to really find much of what I've skimmed over in the past... I think I kinda suck at searching. :-(

Soooo... Where do we stand on RWG? I think Roland said 17.1 isn't likely to have much RWG focus in another thread if any. Maybe he was talking just about the next patch, like a B241.

So I figured I'd ask where we stand on RWG if we're going to have to live with it a while yet.

I'm looking to start up a 16k map for a buddy and I. Buuuuut... Does that still crash when generating? The A17 seeds thread is more conversation now than seeds and I'm not sure what build those seeds are for mostly.

Any advice on..

Is it worth starting Random Gen now?

Do 16k map sizes still crash in generation?

How common are floating POI's? Do they always happen?

Are stores largely missing?

I'm generating one now... Just figured I'd ask before I invested much time in this.

Thanks!

They have moved away from desert in the south, snow in the north, thank goodness. It's patchwork again, and the patches are very large (which is good). Stores = shops, yes? If so there are plenty, but they still occur oddly like 4 Pop'n'Pills next to each other.

What I dislike:

1) My current RWG appears to be 50% wasteland, 30% desert, 20% snow and 20% green forest. WAAAAYYY too much wasteland.

2) The roads are still a wee bit wonky and will regularly end suddenly (even the main highways). And the 90 degree inclines in roads are very much still there.

3) Floating POIs are still there, just not very many of them compared to before.

4) No rivers or major lakes, just puddles here and there.

5) Still far too many dungeon POIs for my liking.

Are the POI's mostly grounded at least?

Thanks a bunch for the input! Much appreciated!

In my opinion it's a hot mess. I had to generate a dozen worlds before I found something that wasn't predominantly wasteland. Prior to B240 I messed around with rwgmixer.xml to try to reduce the wasteland and burnt forest, but I got something decent on my first try with B240 so I didn't bother this time. (I also play SP on a 4k map, which only takes 1/4 the time to generate than an 8k map.)

Personally I hate the patchwork biomes (snow next to desert? really?) and would prefer snow north and desert south (and/or snow at high elevations). Sure it makes mining easier but it's not realistic at all. (Of course, on a 16k world, that's a lot of travel if you want to mine in both biomes.)

The secondary roads are ridiculous and the terrain is bizarre at times. There really aren't cities like A16, and the "suburbs" just sprawl randomly.

I have a feeling that Kinyajuu was in the middle of doing stuff with RWG when the decision was made to release A17, so it was half-baked and he hasn't had time to go back and fix it. I'm hopeful that A17.2 will see some RWG love, but who knows.

I was always thinking that the best RWG map would have the Navezgane biome generating and not the camouflage style.

I like the first expi RWG maps more in comparison to what it looks now.

Edit: That’s why we played Navezgane in b240. It’s RWG time in 17.1.

absolutly my opinion

In b208 i really was positivly surprised how the RWG-world was looking.

Only 1 negative point was the floating POI's - I was ok with biome-size and snow in the north/desert in south

But during the fix on the floating POI's something terrible is happend between b231 and b240 - and b240 is left kinda halfbaked.

Its like u said: It looks they stopped working on RWG in the middle of the work

Here is a (almost) complete list of the Issues and unnice things I saw in b240 RWG:

- wierd roads, streets and paths

- almost no waterponds, rivers or seas on the map

- cars in POI's spawning diametral half into the ground

- desert next to snow biome (this should finaly be fixed now! / =Issue since start)

- wierd landscapes and no good landscape-smoothing (as it was in b208)

- ugly looking 2block-width gravel border between streets and POI's (in b208 this also wasn't so)

- to many Sleepers in the POI's

- to many dungeon-POI's

- suddenly appearing up-plopping Sleepers

- sometimes floating POI's that will collapse when nearing it

- Amount of trader's is sometimes much to low

- game freezes sometimes when generating 16k-maps

- no cities anymore

- POI's in Towns are spawning in wierd way and the density is also not as good as it was in b208
