Price aside, I see VR in a very similar way that I see Dolby Atmos for music.
They're impractical, limited and limiting experiences.
I can only see them being niche things.
You can make an Atmos system extremely cheap but most people just won't have the room to set it up properly. And even if they do, who wants to sit in the center of a speaker configuration to listen to music all the time? I doubt most people do.
VR is the same thing. I don't see how you can have flexible, long lasting engaging gaming experiences as you can with regular 2D monitors.
The only way I can see VR get even close to an expansive gaming experience is through the use of a big facility that can be transformed into whatever you want it to in the VR realm. Otherwise it just feels like a novelty.
Though I do see a lot of potential in VR as a learning tool.
Augmented Reality I think would be a better, more interesting gaming experience.
I also don't see how VR is poverty gatekeeping. It's expensive now because not enough people want it. Consoles are priced at a loss for the manufacturers. They're used to push services which is where the money is. The same would happen with VR if there was enough interest.
