A17's skill system is the worst skill system in terms of compatibility with the game so far in my opinion. Unless you grind to the 300 level, you must specialize in one branch and sacrifice the other, which makes sense in some games, and it does make just a little sense in 7DTD multiplayer (basically only when you have a group of friends who are online 24/7), but it makes absolutely no sense in singleplayer or any other MP scenario other than which I have just described.
The reason why it doesn't fit the game is because it allows/blocks access to core features, without which you can't survive or can't craft etc.
For this reason I think the skill system should be modified so that all of the skills only improve the thing you're trying to be better at, but never allow you do something new.
Crafting a forge, steel etc. should be available to anyone and everyone, sometimes automatically (forge), sometimes in the form of books (cement mixer etc.). The difference between a fighter and a crafter will be that the fighter can build the same things as the crafter, but with very low quality, whereas the specialized crafter can make top quality items and make them faster, more silently or whatever. Likewise the fighter will be better at combat, but even the crafter can defend themselves and loot well enough, especially with their top quality guns.
This system will not only be more compatible with the game and remove unneccessary frustration, but will also still promote specialization and teamwork. Or do you know anything better than a fighter and a crafter working together? The biggest plus is, that as soon as your specialized friend leaves, you can still play the game and don't have to wait for them to come back.
