First, want to say very disappointed with the so called smart AI targeting the weakest blocks in bases started in a17. very few humans in real life can at a glance figure out the weakest link, but in 7DTD all zombies can. This 1 single aspect has taken a lot of the fun out of base building for horde nights. GameszForKicks says it best, watch his youtube.

Anyhow, in frustration because of the current horde night AI...Decided to try something new instead of driving around all night avoiding the horde.

Stand my ground and fight them in the open. No base, no walls, nothing. Just wide open space on all sides.

Turns out this actually worked pretty good because they start coming in 1 and 2. They don't have walls, corners etc to clump together. Can actually see the zombies spawning.

Mass ammo, a few junk turrets(only 1 active, but have 3+ in case can't reload fast enough), mass bandages, some med pills, coffee and water.

Did this on horde-16 on survival difficulty, game stage 172, level 46, mostly STR-boomstick build, tier 5/6 light armor.

Survived the night with 44 hp, no bandages, no pills, no water, no AK47 ammo, no junk turret ammo, but still had about 70 shotgun shells.

Honestly, one of the funniest horde nights but I miss horde night base building.

Seems the new meta is spend mass time between horde nights gathering ammo.

Pity the poor fools playing bow builds.

corridor with a rifle/AK so far, trying a melee base next (room in the center with openings all around and a "clear" path to me if they want to run ALL the way around a large-ish track to get to the "open" door)

Melee with a decent junk turret with extended mag is easy on wandering hordes so far, but horde night is 2 days away on this brawler character, so idk how thats going to go (keeping a fully loaded AK close just in case...and a ladder to my horde-base roof)

Didn´t change that since like A14? Still works. Tower, with a cage corridor around so you can shoot up and down. Spikes and it´s good.

Did a basic small bunker for Day 28. I stuck 4 blade traps and 8 electric fences between two concrete walls. Electrocuted myself but otherwise was pretty good. Managed to live without taking too much damage

This is working good with getting 10+ demolishers showing up on horde night?

If you have an M60, enough AP ammo and grenades, that's enough. The tower should be at least have a 5x5 base. Fill out the bottom 5 blocks of the tower and upgrade them to steel. Around the tower are several 1 block deep trenches filled with spikes. I made the trenches 3 blocks wide in my testbase. Between the trenches and on the outer rim you have multiple layers of barbed wire to slow down the zombies.

You can extend this design by building multiple towers and connect them to have multiple fallback positions.

The bad thing about it is that this construction is pretty much the simplest base design there is but due to the weapons it works even better than a base with electric traps that you try to defend without grenades and without M60. This proves that base design doesn't matter anymore. Only weapons matters and this is sad.

once you see them exploding arrows, you won't pity those bow builds...lol
Rather make grenades, same effect, can be used with any other weapon. I use that brown chirch poi as a base, the zombies only got one easy entrance and they all take it like moths to a flame, I have 3 block high walls, with bars upgraded to iron bars above so they can't stack and jump over them. They are also close enough that if I throw a molotov above the bars where the zombies come in, it'll hit the ones below killing them for me. Day 14 horde barely madew it around the first corner of this little maze I made, while I stood on top of the bars shooting at them. Later on I plan to knock some of the bottom of the walls out and put blade traps in there in a position where no matter where the zombie walks it'll get hit by it as there is only a 2 block space for them to walk between walls. I build my base up by the cieling, its pretty sturdy, even if all the supports are taken out my base won't fall down.

Only downside to this base is you can't really see outside, you have to wait for them to come in, which is going to be an issue with demolishers later on, but i'll worry about that when I get to that point. On Warrior difficulty day 15 now Gamestage is 79 or so. I figured I got till the 21 or most likely the day 28 horde before i'll see demolishers by then i'll have all the blocks in my maze upgraded to steel, as I just found a crucible schematic for sale at trader, which I bought without a second though. Same for that tier 6 steel sledge he was also selling that took all my money to buy but so worth it.

.... Then you have indeed never encountered my Electric fence maze i invented.

Who needs a base or ranged weapons if they are all stunlocked? My only resourceproblem is gas but oh well thats not really an issue hehe

Its the AP ammo imo, the fact it can hit 2 zombies in 1 shot is huge if your on the same level as the zombies its very easy to line 2 of them up especially with corridors. Base design wasn't really a thing after a16, due to the smart zombies, its either have good weapons, or make a base to cheese the AI.

Its not, go mine some oil shale from 22:00 till 4am one night with a steel pickaxe or auger and decent miner 69'er/motherload and you'll come out with enough shale to make over 60000 gas, which is 6 stacks of it. I drive a motorbike everywhere and recently turned 4200 shale into gas, That 42000+ gas is going to last me a while even with driving the motorbike literally everywhere. Gas is only a problem if you don't have the gas can schematic and access to a chem lab. As cars don't really give much, I mean it takes 1000 to fill the minibike, 3000 for the motorcycle and I dunno how much for the 4x4 or gyro. I mean you'd be fine for a while but eventually your going to run out of cars nearby.

Depends on how you look at it. The smarter AI helps with some designs that didn't work so well before. For example, I used a funnel base in A17.

I also tried the same design in A16. There it worked but I had to dig 50 block deep trenches and put barbed wire at the edge of the trenches so the zombies don't fall in. Nevertheless, some fell in instead of running into the entrance.

In A17 the design worked flawlessly. To protect the outer wall I covered it in spikes but not one of them was touched by a zombie. No exploits needed.

Are you playing with 8 zombies at the same time? I can't imagine that this base works with more zombies at the same time. Normally the zombies start making holes in the walls when the passage is blocked by other zombies.

Playin with 32 Z Count in BM. But yeah its an active BM horde Defense, so it never happened to me that they clogged up.

Just gotta kill 'em with weaponry.

Also the walls behind and directly around me are more reinforced and 3-4 layered

My "wide open space" strategy failed miserably the next blood moon. Too many greenies and didn't come in one/twos for some reason.

I've been using the Aldo's Cabinets POI as a shooting gallery. I fill most of the room with barbed wire fencing to slow them down and fire away with my AK. No problems at all so far and very minimal damage. It basically takes me a few in-game hours to repair everything and be ready for the next horde. I haven't seen any demolishers yet though, so let's see what that's like. I'm about to do day 56 horde right now.

we used a U shaped base with traps, we stood overtop of the zombies. We used the fact that they can path up ladders through doors to make them path through blade treaps and stuff. We had 2 shotgun turrets and 2 dart traps (the dart traps were actually not hooked up for this) The floor is 2 thick(ended up not being needed) and the walls are reinforced concrete 3 thick. The zombies enter the front and we can shoot them all the way through with the iron bars :) This lasted pretty well. We really tested it when we gave ourselves xp until we were level 114 and 127 which ended up being gamestage like 100 something for each of us. Even then it would have worked if we shot more but we wanted to test it and were too focused o nthe testing to notice a few demolishers running towards us lol

The box uptop is incase they make it up there, at least we have a last line of defense and it protects the generators from being hit by bird spit, spiders and cops.

edit: the third picture is of what you dont see in the second. Those doors have ladders behind them that the zombies can get up if they make it through the doors.

We like to build elaborate bases xD few have failed to withstand the horde. Our a17 base was never actually breached. I had to spawn in dozens of zombies and just let them go at it to breach it lol We also have like 2-4 thousand ammo made for each horde night. Using 7.62's and 9mm, both normal and AP

I haven't had issue with the old square box with pillars. I use a lot of barb wire to sloe down the zombies for easy headshots, I've then got blade traps for the few that get near me.

my settings are default everything except difficulty is at nomad, blood moon count is at 32. also I'm at 60 minute days.

my most recent horde night which was day 56 was at game stage 172 with me being at level 72. I got 5 demolishers 3 of which exploded. seems letting blade traps handle then is the best way to avoid them exploding since blade traps don't set off their trigger or just burn them down with a hail of bullets.

I went through about 1700 rounds of AP 7.62 ammo. which has been about normal for my blood moons since day 42. takes about 1 or 2 in game days to gather the resources so I can craft that much again. as for repairs they have been very minimal but with the recent demolishers exploding they did do some damage and took out 3 blade traps and 1 spot light. repairs took maybe 15 minutes which isn't all that bad.
