PC Scrap Iron Tools

There is a gap between 1 and 20 where progression seems extremely slow. Seems like a great place for some scrap iron tools.

I agree something needs to be done around level 10 to help out the low level gameplay a bit. There is a scrap iron club, there should be comparable tools.

We also need a low level garden hoe to get at least some basic farming started, and the bike needs to be available sooner than level 30.

Meh, iron axe/pick drop pretty easily in loot. I've got 2 of each by D5 along with a chainsaw and a few guns. Not hard to get enpugh stuff to sell at trader to get them there either, or a hunting knife tho those drop too. Day after I bought mine got one on a drop lol. figures right?

Bought my hoe too on the am of D4, got my farm planted with 13 corn,2 aloe,1 mushroom, 1 potato,2 yucca,9 Chrysanthemums, 1 aloe, 8 goldenrod and 10 cotton. It'll be awhile til it multiplies to where I'm harvesting for other than more seeds but it will get there. Idk when I'll take more farming perks for better harvest. Probably sooner rather than later to speed up that time.

What's the point of adding new tools if they all do the same damage? What you really need in this version is to boost your damage by investing skill points in related perks.

At lower levels Scrap Iron Tools - just as 'we' have scrap iron armor - is definitely worth TFP's consideration due to the aforementioned... With the current gap at around 10 on up till you get full iron tools (level 20?) just makes the game seem extremely tedious and actually boring. Which can hurt new players in wanting to continue because it's become 'too tedious.' It would be logical to have them. The thing is - is that at that time you're wanting bigger backpack space and other things too. Adding the scrap iron tools would help alleviate some of the skill/perk point choking. And I believe that it would help greatly with the early and/or mid level progression of the players. Besides - scrap iron tools would do more damage than stone, but less than iron. Maybe model it after WofW's or Starvations implementation; didn't Valmod have it too? As for grabbing the skills/perks to boost stone axe 'production' goes - it doesn't help much at all... I play with a group of 9 of us and we've all came to basically the same conclusion in that there's a major drag on the game at this time... Scrap Iron Tools would quickly fix it. I'm on my 3rd restart in part because of this lag in progression.

"We" 'for one' or actually 'we' for 9, say we need scrap iron tools please! :)

This is irrelevant to the community at large.

How effectively one player finds an item on one playthrough doesn't address the fact that crafting tools, and more importantly, the level gates, indicate the levels where you will be able to RELIABLY and CONSISTENTLY get access to said gated items. If they do happen to find those tools, then the availability of those tools to craft doesn't affect them. If they don't, then they are given another route to gaining those tools.

Iron tools do more damage than stone. Steel tools do more damage than iron. There is also durability to consider. I'm personally quite sick of having my stone axe break every 2 trees/boulders. I'd imagine others are too.

I'm all for more options....in an endless survival game like this, as opposed to a non-procedural, story driven survival game, smooth progression is key, as well as multiple avenues to said progression.

I'd be quite thrilled to see scrap iron tools....I'd also love another step in between iron and steel (those are a long 50 levels...), and as mentioned in another thread, a super tool available at extremely high levels to help the people who just want to do absolutely massive builds...The more options and tiers they have in this game, the better, so long as the tiers follow the rules (you can't have something be easier to gain AND better in all ways....i'm looking at you wrench vs. hammer), and remain relevant.

After playing for a while it isn't that big a of a deal when you can easily find iron and steel tools in various POI's, it makes finding items the best way to bypass level gates, which is really well done to be honest.

Being able to craft everything is great, but rewarding players early on for looting and raiding I think promotes the value of such activities early on.

I'd say the auger and the chainsaw are pretty super toolish. They only use gas (easily made/found) and take down trees/dirt/stone/ etc... quickly.

as for the hammer vs wrench debate: you get many wrenches but for many levels you have to buy the steel to repair it with. The hammer used forged steel, something thats easily made before the first week is over.

I don't see the need considering more balancing is coming. Bones can be hacked from carcasses with an axe, axes can be repaired with one stone, and iron tools are looted easily enough. Find a wrench and harvest broken work benches and solar panels to get forged iron to repair iron tools. For a survival game, 7D2D seems to give a lot of options to get by till you progress.

^ that's the point. There is an important gap to fill to progress. For sometime unless you're lucky or dump everything into intel, there is a gap in progression. Progression lags out in the beginning, an important time for new players. As it is now I see some 'new players' to the game leaving because of that. Sure, it maybe a small number but it must be considered. Sure there are tonnes of tweaks coming but, this would quickly and immediately solve that, and maybe lead to other things. Besides - it would also 'push' up all the other things. In A16 - things where way too easy. That created a big 'lag' near 'the end game - upwards of level 120 or so. Putting in scrap iron tools would at least help with that and the aforementioned.

So what is it now to 'max out all the skills'? Something like 300 points? YIKES! Adding Scrap Iron tools would definitely help a bit, keep 'progression' and more importantly the feeling/immersion of progressing going at an important part of the game - the beginning!

Less forges on the map, Less Iron/Steel Tools as loot and traders not selling/rewarding them. And adding scrap iron tools. That would be the logic consequence of pushing back the forge so far in level cap.

But no, they just did a cosmetic change and you can still use your iron tools on day 3. (If you are slow that is)

It does feel a bit weird going from stone axe > level gap > forged iron tools. I have to agree with the others regarding scrap iron tools helping out that progression part.

but scrap iron tools make no sense.... The armor is literally pieces of scrap iron duct taped together. The first time you hit a stone with the duct taped contraption you are going to break the tool.

I like your scrap tier tools idea!

I don't see why someone would not make a hasty shovel out of a metal tube and a flat scrap of iron, held tight with metal wire, instead of using rock on stick with grass fiber. Right??

Agreed. Scrap iron tools are a thing I have hoped for.

2 opinions here: either edit your XML's to eliminate level gates, or show us a real world example of these "scrap iron" tools.

I'm not against the latter as I included a recipe to create a Taza's Stone Axe with scrap iron in my own XML's.

You completely grasped the intent of OP and then went off on a tangent. Why?
