Remove the XP gained notification!

A major thing in the game and its nature is the uncertainty of dealing w zombies. Zeds tend to fall when hit n the only reliable way to tell if its a kill is checking for the xp gained notification on bottom right. If you get rid of that, it adds to the uncertainty, making you think of ways to make sure (the ol double tap) and hesitating on moving on. It just adds to intensity.

In my experience, the notification is just a nice to have, mostly ignore it but for kills

So let us wonder, hesitate, get freaked out when one gets back up again behind us.

This can already be done in a modlet that takes something like five minutes to make.  Just like the developers designed.

If you can't tell if the zombie is dead, then you're not paying attention.  It is really easy to know if they are dead or not.  There isn't any surprise.  As far as the notification, I rarely even notice it.  Probably because I have a decent sized monitor and I'm usually focused on the center of it.

Personally for me, it's easy to tell if they're dead for two reason outside of the xp display. They all make a specific "death" sound, if you were to replace the death sound to the pain sound (on top of removing the xp display) then it would be less obvious they're dead, however, it's still easy to tell if they're dead due to how they fall down with ragdoll. The only way to truly remove signs of their death is for them to play a standard animation that isn't linked to them dying on top of other changes I've mentioned.

Gues you're playing mostly guns? With certain melee perks and/or weapon mods zeds get knocked away and down in a very likely fashion.

But besides that: Just knock'm down again untill they stay down. No big deal.
The most common case I'll take the time to quickly glance over the bottom corner for confirmation is long range kills with bow while hunting animals.

The opposite, I mostly use melee, so much so I tend to forget about my gun when in a pinch.
Most zombies fall down when they take 50% of their max health in raw damage. Damage like bleed doesn't count towards this knockdown.
It's possible to knockdown radiated zombies down a second time due to their healing.
Then there's ragdolling, the metal chain mod and sledgehammer have chances to ragdoll, this is different to knockdown, they just drop down all fluidly like.

I'm fervent spear/bow player, using the radremover mod whenever needed, only recently looking into bleed damage with machetes.
Might be a console thing but to me the best visual indicator is "Does it stay down?", maybe I should pay more attention to the actual dropdown animation 🫠
(Wich is ok for me)

After playing for several thousand hours, I've learnt all the animations and reactions, as well as all their sounds. Bow is a lot of fun, done a few games doing archery only. There's the book that causes ragdoll too.

I think the only way to truly make it an unknown if they're dead or not would be to 1) remove xp display, 2) remove all pain and death sounds 3) and always play a ragdoll animation when they get knocked off their feet or die

Sometimes I can't tell who is dead and who isn't, because there's 5 bodies in a pile on the floor from me bonking them with a sledge.

If there's just 1 zombie, sure, it's easy to tell. But if there's 5, 10, 15, and you're meleeing them all... Then you just gotta see which ones try to get back up.

In adition: Remove burning effects when using flame mod on weapon. This goes for all similair effects.
Burning zeds tend to get up again, if flames stop abrubtly it's dead.

Game would get a bit boring without all those, personaly I don't see the issue of little subtile indicators. In hectic situations only the Top Gun pilots amongst us are able to keep track of wich Zed is dead and wich isn't so it's basicly hit it again as long as it gets up. As long as we don't see any comoc style "FATAL BLOW" or "KILL!!!" like messages it's no big deal.

(Looking at you, Expedition 33! looks great but them annoying numbers during battle...)

Considering the thread is about the XP notification being used to know if something is dead, it really isn't about killing many zombies at the same time because the XP notification wouldn't tell you if you killed a lot at once.  It would just give you an idea if you killed any or if you killed some.  If you're really quick with math, you could get an idea of how many you killed from it since it'll be a total XP. But since zombie tiers have different XP and if you're killing a lot at once, knowing if the numbers matches the number of zombies you killed wouldn't be easy.  They'd likely be standing up before you were sure based on that.  In any case, they aren't really that hard to tell if they are dead even if you are killing a lot at once, as long as you are paying attention.
