I thought destruction mode only happened during blood moons but maybe that's wrong?
JaWoodle does all his base test first without having an active blood moon, just F6-spawns. They DestroyArea just fine.
Some of the AI tags are something like "no path to player => destroy" (not literal), maybe the long distance "destroys" just didn't have the time to path to you yet* and that leads to "no path".
*the pathfinding is somewhat lazy, seeing zeds run past you is probably an indication of that. It just updates a little late.

Did you mean destruction mode or rage mode? Rage mode just makes them run at you when they get damaged. Destruction mode makes them forget pathways and just break things until they get damaged and suddenly remember again. They can go into rage mode any time but I thought destruction mode only happened during blood moons but maybe that's wrong? Sometimes during POI explorations I see zombies ignore me to hit a wall or the floor and sometimes they decide to follow some weird roundabout pathway to come get me instead of just walking through the doorway or hallway between us--especially if there is an open window next to them. On clear quests I've watched a zombie climb out a window and then watched its red dot on my compass move around outside going around and back in and up through the POI to come get me when it could have just taken 5 steps directly towards me. Funny stuff.
Woke up a sleeping zed in a garage, it took 2 steps towards and started beating the crap out of a tool box lol it's like it completely forgot that I was there watching it.... on a serious note, I now believe the 2.0 zombies now have ADHD or ADD :ROFLMAO:

I guess the difference is that during non-bloodmoon encounters the zombies have a timer to forget about you once they lose line of sight and don't continually try to get to you even if they can't directly see you so destroy area may not trigger as often. They are as likely to de-agro as they are to switch into destruction mode-- or just die since you are probably moving forward actively killing them rather than waiting for them to come at you in your defensive position.

Hopefully they can get stuff like this sorted for bandits. With zombies bizarre behavior can actually be thematic but it won't go over very well with human opponents.

Well, if the bandits do the same, I'm fine with it, it gives me and all the other players a chance to get in that extra damage lol

I first read that like they're alternative in the AI - I know you're not saying that, but that made me think; I wouldn't know if they were atm. The POI zeds are giving up the chase way more often than before, and biome spawns are doing something similar. I've kinda counted that off as "just buggy", but I dunno, might even be a mechanic.

All that to say, I don't actually know much in the changing environment :)

But yeah, it's more obvious in a horde, when they "by base design" have no path to you and there's constantly a lot agroed.

And when the Zs (non blood moon) blow up a vehicle, that can trigger screamers . . . I think that's what happened to me once.
I believe the scouts are blocked during the bloodmoon event. They will show up if your fighting after the end of the event creates enough heat though.
