PC Night vision goggles useless again?

I really liked the A16 implementation of the NVGs. It was a noisy image, but they actually gave you decent vision in dark areas/during nighttime. They seem to have been reworked for A17 and all I can see now is that they put a green filter over everything while doing nothing to actually enhance visibility. In some cases it even seems worse. In short, I just wasted 5700 zombie dollars for something that benefits me less than the pair of shades I found in the trash.

Is there something I'm missing? Can they be modded or otherwise buffed in game? Or are we supposed to choose between seeing nothing at night or alerting every zombie that comes near with a mining helmet/flashlight attachment?

tweak your gamma up a notch, it may be set slightly too low. Just enough to make/break the difference with the NVG's.

I have played around with gamma, but to make a difference I have to set it so high that things become visible without NVGs as well. So again, there's no benefit to the NVGs, as far as I can tell. It's just a green filter over what's already there.

Anyone else notice this? If I'm the only one, maybe it's something on my end.. definitely not gamma though.

There was a MASSIVE change to the goggles in the 2nd patch.

What I suspect is that there were more OP than was intended (they worked REALLY well) and they wanted to tune them down a bit to fit closer with the description ("they probably don't work anymore"). Older incarnations of the goggles (in other alphas) were so bad that they were only good as face armor.

I HOPE that they split the difference here and make them work better again, but perhaps not quite so perfectly. The item doesn't provide face armor anymore; so as it is, it's completely useless....unless you're in love with the color green.

Perfect opportunity for item quality vs. effectiveness.

The night vision in your screenshot is absolutely garbage. IF only one of TFP had tried real NVG, the look would be totally different. They don´t understand the difference between NVG and light amplifiers (the look of your screenshot)

A real NVG would make you blind, because you look at a direct light source. So much realism...lol

Yes the NVG suck now. If they nerfed them to fit the description which also said "you should repair them with a repair kit" then they should work better when you repair them. If they are not going to fix them then they should just get rid of them. They should work like they did in alpha 16. Everyone gets the same benefit if they use them, so it is not like 1 person has and advantage over someone else.

Considering you give up wearing a stat raising item (I like the lucky goggles myself) to use them I don't think they are OP at all. They were pretty much useless pre-A17, especially if it was raining.

They broke them in b199, they were very nice in b197, but something they did between the 2 builds broke them and made them pretty much useless. For now I might do what I did in a16 if I can, which is set the light value of the mining helm light to bascally 0, so zombies won't aggro on it at all. Assuming that still works.

Wasted 6k wish I read your post earlier.

What a shame, putting on NVG and looting at night was one of my fav things to do in A16.

Agree, hope fix soon.

Yep it is!
