New quest idea: Clear/Repair

I sometimes do "Clear Zombies" quests and then "rearrange/repair" the POI after I'm done, especially if the quest is finished a little after 10pm and I have to wait till morning to turn it in.
I figured, if we have "Restore power" quests, it could be interesting to have a new quest-type, like "Clear/Repair" quests... Clearing the POI then have a "health status" of the POI at like 50%, and we need to repair blocks, pipes, windows, etc. to bring it up to 100%.
Maybe give a reward depending on what % you repair it to and leave it repaired to 75% or 80%.

Yeah, the issue is having enough resources with you and then making the reward good enough to make it worth spending all those resources. It's an interesting idea, but unless there are resource piles with the POI to be used, it probably won't be something people will do more than once. And if there are a lot of resources at the POI, people will just loot the resources rather than doing the quest. Even if they only appear when starting the quest, people will just start it and loot the resources and leave without doing the quest because the resources can be more valuable than the reward for completing it, especially in the early game.

Yeah, gotta agree here. It's a nice idea in theory, but the way that the game is designed, it's just not feasible. The only POIs that players would want to fix up would assumedly be smaller POIs. If that's the case, we're talking low tier quests. If I'm still taking low tier quests, I'm not wasting what little resources I have on repairing something that is going to net me a pitiful quest reward. As mentioned the other possibility is that the trader will give me the resources needed. Makes sense, but I think most players will just steal the resources after the novelty of the quest has worn off. If or when an actual trader reputation system is put in place, then I could see this working, because as of right now, there's literally no downside to failing/cancelling a quest.

In general, I never do restore power quests either. I just don't find them fun and I've got better things to do during the night. And that's ignoring the logic issue I have with restoring power to a place that's abandoned and doesn't change the world in any meaningful way. However, just to expand on your original idea - what if there was a specific component that needed to be fixed at the POI, similar to restore power, and the trader gives you a "parts box" at the time you accept the quest? Then you deposit the parts box at a specified location and then interact to perform the repair? That's at least a little more interactive and doesn't have to happen at night.

I think developing the underlying capability to support this would fuel other mission types. For instance: restoring the radio broadcast (amplifier, antenna) capabilities at the top of the skyscraper. Perhaps the Trader gives you a generic box (MacGuffin) that has to be installed.

They'd have to tell you ahead of time what you needed to repair it. I doubt most people carry cobble/cement/what have you around with them all the time.

That, or they would have to permit you to leave the POI and bring stuff back to work on the POI. Perhaps there was a timer rather than a boundary.

I would say the Trader could give you the materials in a box, but you could drop the mission and use the materials.

I haven't been doing them either, and maybe I should rethink that. What I didn't like about them was that I felt I was just going to be ambushed. But they are close to another suggestion that I would favor, which is "go to this POI, setup some defenses, and then get attacked by a horde." They're pretty close in execution and I should maybe think about trying them again.

I love discussing ideas like what's happening here.

I love the idea of having the trader provide "parts boxes" as MacGuffins, or even finding them at the start of the POI when the quest is activated. Like "someone already tried to fix, the resources are there, but he/she couldn't finish the job."

Also, needing to find where these boxes would go, identified by an icon on the compass (like the courier satchel), then "using" that space for 20 seconds (like unlocking a gun box or starting a generator).
Having these boxes done could - maybe - provide an aesthetic change to the POI, showing that "you have repaired it"?

I also thought of a starter quest - similar to the buried supplies start quest - that the trader would provide a level 1 wrench, that you would need to use on specific sections of the POI. Like pipes, lights, whatever. But I know that the wrench isn't used to repair in the game, so it might not be doable.

I'm by far NOT a game coder or developer, so I'm just throwing out ideas.

The problem with a timer is that perhaps the quest is 2km away, and you don't have a vehicle yet. Or maybe you have the resources for 500 cobblestone, but you don't have it made yet. The timer would have to be very long, or at least give you some sort of warning what sort of materials you'd need before you start the quest.

I like the macguffin idea, however.
