PC New Controller Controls (FEEDBACK)

Does anyone know if the devs have commented on this yet? I’ve only seen the one comment from them saying that they’re discussing it internally a week ago. Does it always take them this long just to make a decision on something like this? An ETA or at least an acknowledgement that they’re going to do something would be nice..

Devs commenting is random, you will most likely find out about results through the patch notes of the next experimental or stable release. If they have to change a lot it could take longer.

I remember at least one of them giving VERY high praise to the controller changes during the dev streams.

I have yet to see a single positive reaction from an actual player.

Weird disconnect. Makes me wonder where TFP were looking when giving that assessment.

Opinions vary, I guess? I don't even use a controller so WTF do I know?🤐

Navigation of the menu, backpack and other UI is bad right now. Could we please move back to having a pointer arrow to select from again? Controller now locks onto boxes, requires you holding Y to perform actions, sometimes use the right joystick, and jumps all over the place when selecting tiles between your inventory and other menus.

The cursor is still there if you use the track pad in the middle. It's the holding triangle to use an item that is really getting to me. Healing  eating,  crafting. Not to mention that you can't get to the individual pages (tools/science/clothing) of the creator menu. Oh and you can't navigate and read skills, the button to read them uses the points. And don't get me started on searching or bringing up an on screen keyboard. All those lovely new boxes I was going to play with are useless on controller.
I use a PS5 controller. There is no cursor with or without the track pad.

I've been playing 7DtD since A16 and using a gamepad since A19 (more than 3,000 hours in Steam).  The interface and actions were fine.  Now v1.0 removed the virtual cursor and added button combos for basic stuff like dropping items or crafting.  Navigating the inventory, skill trees or any menu now takes much longer without a cursor.  I now have to use a mouse to navigate the menus and inventory, while I use a gamepad for general game play.  This is ridiculous!  This a bad decision affecting console and PC users with gamepads.  Please return the virtual cursor and pre-v1.0 Dpad actions.

Update dropped today. No fix. I don't think they are going to reverse it.

That is no indication that they don't have plans of reversing or changing the controllers based on feedback.  The update dropped just now is for the changes that they have implemented at this point.

I expect one thing that is going to take longer for the controller review / discussion / changes is that they have to coordinate and work with the console development team.

They have to reverse it you can’t even get to some of the perks in the skill menu. At least I wasn’t able to.

Whatever they do they probably won't simply reverse it, much more likely will be that they have to reimplement the cursor or whatever is needed inside their new controller code. It means it will probably take longer to implement, with testing and all.

Hopefully along with that is the removal of having to hold down triangle to manage or do actions with items. It makes doing things far more cumbersome.

I just want my 3 quick keys back with the dpad

or if they can figure out how to make the quick select radial menu not freeze you in place while using it that would also help.

Controller players now have no way to quickswap between 3 items of their own choosing, they can only quickswap between the last 2 things which is very suboptimal.

I play 7 Days on pc and have been playing for years. i started out on the xbox so i got use to playing 7 days on controller. But now that I have switched to pc, I still play on controller and in the recent update, one thing has changed that is so irritating. PLEASE BRING BACK THE CURSOR FOR CONTROLLER!!! Having to move through each individual square while scrolling through my inventory and crafting menu takes longer and is annoying because it doesn't always move the the slot i want it to. From Alpha 15-Alpha 21 had the best controls. Please change them back!

I dearly hope that the changes are reversed, or an in game option is given to reverse them, for the cursor, holding Y / Triangle, and the Hotbar Quickswap.

I dread that this might not be addressed by the time Console launches on July 25th, that’d really stink as not only would I have to wait to purchase until it’s fixed, but it could be a very souring experience for new players.

I’m giving them til the full release then I’m done with this game and certainly won’t be buying it on PS5 or playing anything else these guys release. Me, my wife, my best friend and his 2 bros were all pumped for 1.0 and console cross play but now we’re just annoyed and @%$#ed off.

The fact that these devs can’t even be bothered to respond is a slap in the face. They have ONE game, it’s not like they’re Microsoft. This isn’t just a feature that people don’t like, they literally made it unplayable for controller players and it doesn’t seem to be a priority for them to fix it. They don’t care. It’s disrespectful to their fans and the community. Feels like they’re telling us to go f ourselves. It’s insulting. I understand that it could be a lot of work to fix and take time but that’s when they should act like professionals AND SAY SOMETHING.

There is already a thread for this.  I would suggest posting there.  This thread will just bring unwanted attention from a moderator.

The following is from a place of love and just wanting to see this game succeed.

  • Bring back the option for cursor in menus.
  • Remove hold Y to access dpad options in menus.
  • Remove the ability to drop a tool belt item with a single click. (you can unbind this currently)
  • I love the introduction of the toolbelt wheel
  • Hold dpad left for wheel(Move stick to select, release without selecting to select middle option. Personally, I would love to see 3 more toolbelt slots and make the wheel a clock.)
  • Hold dpad up for torch toggle
  • Hold dpad right for PTT(I guess)
  • Hold dpad down for remove HUD (or something)
  • Scope zoom in/out should require holding the ADS button.
  • Button mapping is amazing and I am incredibly thankful!
I agree strongly with most of your points. And want to add/emphasize:

  • why add "hold Y" to do something that doesn't benefit from the extra complication?
  • why is d-pad-left not 'light' like it is in vehicles? keep it consistent.
  • hold d-pad could be very useful for things that are not urgent, like 'light'
  • remove the wrap-around. When I'm trying  to select something in the top left and suddenly the selection is in the bottom right with no quick way to get back.
  • don't default to top-left when looking into a container. It makes base inventory management a nightmare. Or provide a single-button press to swap to your inventory or the container's.
  • give us the free cursor back. It worked. It's infinitely better than whatever there is now.
  • when we select controller layer as PlayStation, give us PlayStation button prompts.

I've tweaked my controller settings extensively in-game and in steam. I have controller 'hotkeys' for all 10 toolbelt slots (I had 15 in A21 but they removed this ability). I still  have access to the toolbelt wheel,  quick-swap, and light. Right d-pad is map. Left d-pad is quests. But there is no overcoming the removal of the cursor. It is molasses slow to do any inventory management as it is. And some things cannot be done without mouse and keyboard.

Overall the game is unplayable with controller only. If combined with keyboard and mouse it upgrades to painfully slow.
