PC Need help with Farm Plots

Any help would be appreciated.

I have a rain catcher in a middle of a 5x5 area. I left the four sides open so extra water can pile up there then put plots down around the rest filling up the area. I then planted seeds but they never grow only says seeds. Do I need to dig under the plots to water it? Ive tried it with the rain catcher same level as plots, one level down and two levels down.

Plz Help

BTW I am playing current version with darkness falls mod

This place here is about the vanilla game and there is no such thing as a rain catcher.
