Mining Randomly..

So, In last version, I picked a spot in town. And dug down and down and then created a huge cavern.
I found Iron, Nitrate, Coal, lead etc. all while digging.

This version I have dug down 25 meters and created a massive area, havent found anything.
Did they change how just random digging/mining is? or has it always been this way, I just got lucky on the previous version?

In 2.0, while you can still find most ore in every biome, biomes now favor a certain one and are more scattered about. Iron in the Pine Forest, potassium nitrate in the Burnt Forest, oil shale in the Desert, coal in the Snow, and lead in the Wasteland.

But are you saying you wont find the others in the biomes?
I know my brother found brass in the wasteland biome, I didn't think you could mine Brass

Brass comes from the strenght mastery perk brass miner which gives you a chance to get brass when mining any other ore.

I feel there were more ore pockets (regardless of the type) deep underground than in 1.X.

Haven't investigated it thoroughly though.

I'm pretty sure you can still find them in any biome (except shale), but they are more rare. I haven't really paid attention, though. But the ore veins seems to be smaller, which would make it harder to randomly find ore if you're not digging down from an ore node.

Came across a coal vein last night in the pine forest, spent almost 3 hours mining it and still tons of coal to mine it looks like, had to put up several pillars around the area to keep it from collapsing on me lol and in the desert I found an iron vein that has a mix of nitrate/iron/lead its been a pretty productive mine as well.

That's really neat that they're making mineral veins like real life. Mixtures of metals.

I just looted a lvl 5 auger.
Is this well worth carrying and the accompanying gas? Or just stick with a lvl 5 pickaxe?

Opinions are mixed on it. Youtubers tend to say the pickaxe is better and if you watch their video, they will show you why.
Personally late game I do carry an auger and chainsaw. By the time you are getting around by gyrocopter you should be carrying gas at all times anyway.
Mining it is a mixed bag since it is going to draw more screamers, and much as I love screamers, not so much when I am trying to diggy diggy hole.

Yeah, it's just your preference. People say picks are better, but I never use a pick. I use a stone axe until I get an auger. Only rarely will I use a pick if I happen to find one, but even if I do find one, I usually don't bother with it.

I do. I use the motorcycle and have 5-8000 gas on me.

Wow! I use the iron axe at least, but I am not too fond of the steel pick and by the time I think about maybe making one, I can already make an augur if I haven't found one. It is hard to put away the QL6 stone axe though since it is just so versatile, especially with the metal/stone/wood mods on it.

Really? That's pretty silly from TFP. Bronze is a metal allow composed of copper and tin (usually) so you can't actually "dig" it.

Tip: did you know there's a round exploded fuel tank POI that you can find in the Forest biome which has a sizable chunk of Oil Shale? :)

Yeah, and brass is copper and zinc. Which is what bullet casings are made of. Which actually can occur naturally, although it is extremely rare.

It's faster to dig with a drill, but calmer with a pickaxe. Personally, I prefer a pickaxe because I can hear if someone approaches me. With a drill, I often get hit in the back when digging, because I can't hear those approaching me.

Pickaxe vs auger, if you have enough point in Miner69er to not run out stamina, they're relatively close. Auger is a little faster either way.

I go with pick for the control / ease though, with auger I end up annoyed at the aiming / recoil. If I want a Lot of something, then auger.

I go with Auger as soon as I am able to find or craft one, but that is because I only put one point in miner 69r since I will run out of stamina and sit there waiting for it to replenish. I use the steel pickaxe while I am going through POIs or if I need more precise mining.
