PC Mining in A17

I didnt play much A16 but have always been used to big holes in the ground visable on the map to indicate a cave. Is that all gone now? I am looking for nitrate and having the darndest time trying to figure out how to mine now. Can someone please give me some tips or tell me what the best way to find ore veins is now

Caves still exist, in fact they are identical to A16 in that regard. The map generation has changed so it's not quite as obvious where they are but you can spot them.

Nitrate can be farmed from boulders (same as A16) and while this is anecdotal I'd say you get more nitrate turning up while looting low level stuff (like garbage).

Check the journal for info on mining. Ore veins exist, some at surface, supposedly more near bedrock. Surface veins are indicated by boulders/gravel patches. Each biome has its own "main" ore.

How close to the surface is that though? I'm digging around under some of the small bulders and finding no ore so far :/

Pretty sure the journal is just copied and pasted from 16. If we can't mine then there will come a point where there will be no boulders, loot, caves etc left on the map. Then it'll be time for a server wipe.

Just found my first ore at around plus 15. Died from a cave in there. But lot´s of ore. Also lead and nitrate together. Under the forrest biome.
