PC Microstuttering

You guys are hilarious. You think these devs chose Unity over Unreal because that's all they could afford. These devs are multi millionaires. They chose Unity on purpose because that's what they felt was the right engine to go with.

Performance is really terrible in A17. It was bad when A17 first dropped and it's just dreadful in the current build. Things run nominally until I go into a POI (not every POI but most of them) or there are zeds on screen. Then my FPS bottoms out. It's gotten down to single digits. Meanwhile my card (GTX 970) is boiling and the fan is at full throttle.

I booted up A16.4 and I get a silky 60FPS with settings maxed. One of many reasons I think I'm going back to A16.4.

Has nothing at all to do with this topic. You should create your own thread so we can help you out better as that doesn't seem right. GTX 970 should be performing a lot better than that in A17.

My performance issues include microstuttering. No matter; I have already rolled back at 16.4 and don't see myself reversing course.

I use 970, no problems at all. Your card should be close to max load though, as mine is (tested on 2 970's with the same performance results). Sounds to me like a temperature issue. Is it clean?

I dunno, I run silky smooth 60 fps except when inside some POIs or using torches on the walls. Both issues ask for optimizations, which devs are working on right now, hopefully, besides selling t-shirts.
Turn. Off. Reflections.

Fox, do you have proof these guys started, prior to the sales of 7 Days, as multi-millionaires? It's easy to say but I just have trouble believing it. Indie developers are generally NOT rich. Not disputing you, simply asking for some proof.

Asuzu, nVidia is not cursed with Voodoo (3dfx). They were separate companies back in the day and in fact at that time 3dfx was by far better. We're talking DOS and Win9X here. 3dfx however, started rushing hardware and drivers and went under. It was then that nVidia purchased them to gain rights to things like the Glide API. 3dfx did have many good things until they started rushing to try to push out hardware and drivers faster than anybody else. Now who else was it that was going under due to shoddy drivers and got bought out? That's right, ATI.

Yes and no... I'm not going to go into details with you as I'm sure even I'm probably not supposed to know some of the things that I know, but if you stick around long enough, maybe become a moderator for 2 years like I did, etc, stuff occasionally leaks out and you catch wind. But I know well enough to keep stuff like that to myself. But what you (and anyone else) can do is basic math. We all know the devs here have sold far more than a half million copies of this game as they officially celebrated that several years ago, so let's just for the sake of working with absolute proven facts that are publically available and keep it at half million copies (even though they're probably closer to a million or more by now). So, the game started off selling at $35 and then worked it's way down to I think $25, and then the sales... so for the sake of absolute worst case scenario, $15 sale price per copy times half million sold = how much money again? And that was absolute worst case scenario. They more than likely made 2 or 3 times that amount by now. And that doesn't even include the money they received when they sold the rights to the game to the console publishers which I know isn't cheap. So ya... it's basic math. And if you think the cost in making the game is somehow making a large impact on their profits, think again.

4 million copies as per anandtech article.

Yes, but when they started they may not have had that cash, and UE is more expensive than Unity, though Unity can't hold a candle to it either. I was asking if you knoew that they had the cash when they had to make the engine decision. Doesn't matter, I like the game, but it would rock in UE4!

They've had more than 6 years and I think 2 engine upgrades (which requires re-coding most of the game) to decide. And they received a half million during kickstarter, so money was definitely not an issue. Clearly, they have no interest in UE at all. I imagine they did it because maybe UE has limitations that the devs didn't like and would have effected this game negatively somehow.

Now, at what point are you going to get back on topic?

I'm using Windows 7 on all of my computers (and so are my family and friends)... because it's better.

I believe you. I've heard that Windows 10 sucks for games, but I didn't know what the fallback windows was. Thanks. :)

Not just for games... for everything in general.

haha, your kidding right? Windows 10 is the best OS yet and 7 isn't even supported anymore which in itself will make it worse.

Just for clarification, I never once made a claim that Windows 7 performed better in games, at least not fps-wise or w/e, I just think Windows 7 is better in every other way. Better / simpler interface (and not touchscreen icon nonsense), much less spy junk (none if "custom"), generally better support with games (in terms of stability), though I imagine that won't last much longer, easier to troubleshoot (as with all older OS due to familiarity), no updates to delete your personal files or even forced updates and restarts to get in the way of your life at all.

Life is just easier / better with Windows 7 compared to Windows 10. I'm not saying Windows 7 is the best, as I do actually hate Windows 7, but it's currently better than any alternatives. That's why (last I checked) 54% of the population still uses Windows 7. The only advantage Windows 10 has over 7 is DirectX 12 which no one cares about and the fact that most ppl got it for free. Windows updates are dumb, especially daily, weekly and even monthly updates. When you install Windows, install all available updates to the current, then disable future updates completely for at least a year. ppl are so paranoid about hackers and stuff that they fall for this daily update nonsense as if the world revolves around them and by not updating, they're putting themselves at risk. I have no anti-virus or firewall or anything of that sort running in the background of any of my 3 computers, running an outdated Windows 7, and haven't received a virus I couldn't deal with without wiping the system or anything of that sort in many years (and when it does happen, everything is backed up and reloaded within the day as if nothing bad happened at all). And yes, I do a lot of risky stuff on the daily just like anyone else.

Once I lose driver support for Windows 7, then I'll switch to a different OS, maybe I'll try Linux for a while. Until then, I'm sticking with it.

Anyone see the video F. Updates - Endless Jess? I won't post the link as it'd likely break forum rules due to language used, but that's pretty much the level of anger I would have if I had to use Windows 10.

Now, it'd be really nice if ppl could stay on topic for once.

O/S choice is at least potentially related to the topic...and WIN7 is superior to 10 in so many ways, but the UI is what strikes me the hardest. It's the most bizarre amalgam of the old, the new and the hopeless.

Fox: "I'm using Windows 7 on all of my computers (and so are my family and friends)... because it's better."

Aldranon: "I believe you. I've heard that Windows 10 sucks for games, but I didn't know what the fallback windows was. Thanks."

Fox: "Not just for games... for everything in general."

I'd think that exchange would make...well, just about anybody conclude that you (at least once) made a claim that windows 7 performed better in games. :playful:

Personally, I believe it does better with games. It's the last "real" O/S. WIN10 ~may~ morph into something better over time of course.

My rig is over 8 years old with...

i7 970 3.2ghz

GeForce 980 GTX

50-60+ FPS typically. No "microstuttering" as I understand it.
