Putting this post to rest, if you do have issues please open a new topic.

Hello, Survivors!

There have been reports about issues using the Gamepass version of the game and it would be useful to get some information to try to narrow down causations.

If you have had issues using this version, please use the bug report format and post it in this thread.

Talked about issues include:

  • Game randomly closing after about 30 minutes of gameplay
  • Not able to connect to Steam friends/ability to find friends
  • Not able to join other Microsoft/XBOX friends
  • Achievements not working (please make sure you close the game out and reload it and see if they appear)
  • Heavy lag that isn't present in the Steam version

Besides output logs, it could be useful to have your DxDiag results, you can find it by entering dxdiag in the Run Box or the Search function. Hit Save All and upload that to pastebin.

Thank you.

2 Gamepass players with the crash issue

We are playing Day 68 Navezgane(no mods/Gamepass version) on a self-hosted dedicated server. We are a group of 3. Everything was working fine until recently, Day 64 or so. Now 2 of the 3 players crash every 20-30 minutes after connecting, and usually crash within a minute or two of each other. The two players play on the same network. One of the players switched to a new PC before starting to crash, the other did not. One of the crashing players tried playing on a random public server and continued to crash.

The 3rd player that does not crash is not part of the same network. He is also the one hosting the dedicated server on one of his computers on his network(not sure if that is relevant).

Serverconfig.xml is mostly the default config besides the server name, game name, and EAC being disabled.

Any ideas would be highly appreciated.

The following did not solve the problem:

  • Lowering graphics settings to minimum
  • Disabled Motion blur
  • Turning off EAC on the server/clients
  • Disabled GameSparks on clients
  • Updated GPU drivers.
  • Praying to 4 different gods.
Player 1: New PC, same network as Player 2

dxdiag https://pastebin.com/q1LtP8Rx
HP Zbook
Intel i7-10850H CPU @ 2.70GHz
32GB Ram
RTX 2070

Player 2: Same PC as before crashes, same network as Player 1, Also crashes on a public server

log example https://pastebin.com/fBDGbpvu

Intel Core i7-6700K
16GB RAM
GTX 1070

Player 3: does not crash, same network as dedicated server

Somewhat separate from my report of this issue, there's a possibility that the crash is not Gamepass-exclusive. These players seem to have the same symptoms on Steam:

Thank you for the information, there seems to be some good intel here. Will have to sift through the details, but in the meantime ensure all firewalls/AV programs have either exceptions or turned off for testing, and any other programs that "boost" gaming or networking performance are disabled. These are typically programs that came with the computer. Also, run command prompt with admin rights, enter these (one after another):

ipconfig /flushdns

netsh int ip reset

Reboot your computer and your network. Well, do all of this for any applicable systems.

I think I need an explanation for this behavior: There seem to be two copies of the game installed for both these machines. I don't know which one is "real" and should be added to exceptions for av/firewall.

  • From Gamepass App, select the game->manage->browse files. This bring me to the directory I chose to install at.
  • From the launcher (either directory), select Tools->open game folder. This brings me to an entirely different directory: C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\TheFunPimps.7DaystoDiePC_0.2005.2.0_x64__yapmrbwff4apt

EDIT: Running both launchers and both game exe, I can see through Task Manager that only the original install directory is actually launched. I tested putting a new text file in the original install directory and it showed up in the WindowsApps one. So this is some bizarre Windows behavior and these directories are linked or cloned.

Well then just a note to the devs here that the launcher opens up the weird one!

I've now tried av exception, firewall exception, the network commands above, rebooting the machine, and rebooting the network.

Also tried running the launcher from the install directory, switching from DX11 to GL, and playing a new game hosted on my PC.

Still crashing.

One more bit of information that may prove useful if you don't mind:

Open Powershell with admin rights (right click, run as admin), then enter this line into it:

$UserPath = "$($env:USERPROFILE)\Desktop\"; get-process | out-file $UserPath\output.txt

That will automatically get your location to your desktop regardless of drive lettering and then output all your running processes to a text file, called output.txt

Upload that to wherever, pastebin prob is the easiest. You can do this with regular cmd, tasklist > c:\output.txt  replacing c:\ with wherever you want the file to be saved to.

Will provide that info when I get back.

In the meantime, we tried playing again tonight with some more experiments. I played tethered to my phone for data while the other PC was still on the normal network. I still crashed, so this does not appear to be network related.

Also the timing on the crashes is very specific. Both of us who are crashing do so at the same interval, but not at the same time. So we both crash x minutes after we log in. But, x is variable and changes every time. Whoever logs back in first will be the first to crash next time, but after an unknown amount of minutes.

Hmm, nothing stands out just yet. Going to look over it all again. I will bring this up with the information with the team and see what's going on, thanks for the information you've provided!

More experiments today! After ruling out network, any graphic settings we could, and 20 other suggestions, we went to more extreme measures. Player 2 reinstalled the game via gamepass. It had moderate success with no clear pattern on exactly why. We also tried different server save files. Here are the events:

  • Player 2, new reinstall, random public server

✔️50 min with no crash, logged out

[*]Player 2, new reinstall, original server with a mostly new save file

  • ❌crash after 30 min

[*]Player 2, new reinstall, random public server

  • ❌crash after 26 min

[*]Player 2, new reinstall, original server with a backup of the original save file at day 43

  • ✔️59 minutes with no crash
  • ❌then Player 1 logs in, crash 29 min later

[*]Player 1, same install (second machine), original server with a backup of the original save file at day 43

  • ✔️115 min with no crash (did get a Unity error but game kept running)
  • ❌Player 2 logs back in after crashing, crash 5 min later

So, our suspicion is that there's something about these accounts interacting that's messing things up. It's not the only reason the crashes happen, but it seems to make things worse. I've heard about issues with Xbox accounts not matching Windows Store accounts causing issues in the past, so here's some info about them:

  • Player 1 uses MS Account 1 on the Xbox app and Windows Store. There is a second account also logged in to Windows Store, MS Account 3.
  • Player 2 uses MS Account 2 on the Xbox app and MS Account 1 on Windows Store.
We decided to get the Steam version rather than experiment further.

Interesting! So what you mean is, say, Player 1 is using the Xbox App/Windows Store to play the game and there is a second account logged into the MS Store at the same time?

there is a second account logged into the MS Store at the same time?
Yes, one is a "work or school" account. This is for P1.

Untitled.png

P2 only has one account logged into windows store, so that alone is not the issue. Both players both have the same MS acct logged in to Windows Store. For P1 this is the same as the acct used for Xbox, for P2 it is different from the acct used for Xbox.

Unfortunately, we can't change the setup because those are the accounts through which the respective gamepass and windows purchases have been placed.

I managed to figure out an account to have logged in simultaneously with the account I was playing with, joined a random server and played for over an hour and all was fine. Nevertheless, I have made a ticket and will see if the dev(s) can figure something out. Sorry about this, and thank you so much for all the information, it helps a lot.

Any update with this issue on the Game Pass version? I'm having the same issue, P2P server on the same network, game crashes to desktop on both PC's every 30min (almost on the dot).

Would you or @Pastymind connecting with me on a test server or P2P sometime? It's been a rough one to nail down, and it would help if I could collect data needed on my end.

Yea we could tee something up.. maybe me inviting you to my game that I'm having the crash issues would be the best bet? Also I'm in the Australian Time zone so we'd have to work around that.

Yeah, either way. I would like at least one session of you connecting to me, but we can do both or just the other way. Yeah, I can work around that time zone; what time frame/day would work for you there?
