Liquid simulation - hardcoded only to vanilla water block?

Is it possible for new liquid-type blocks to be added and actually function properly?

Simply adding a new "waterTest" block doesn't seem to work, even if I extend from the original vanilla water blocks. Sure, the block looks fine in the creative menu and appears to be placeable, but when placed in the editor the block is invisible. It's physically there, just doesn't render. It's also static, with no water simulation going on.

I've noticed the same problem in the Custom Blocks Pack  with its radiation and fire blocks -- they don't render and don't flow.

Is this a hardcoded limitation?

The vanilla water block is not able to be copied or edited  .  The ones in the cbp in a21 where visible but with the water change they went invisible.  Still work as intended tho

Okay, thanks. Appreciate the answer. Disappointing, but at least I know not to spend anymore time on it.
