PC Lets Talk Performance

We all know this game isn't optimized yet and I'm curious what settings/systems everyone else is running and their overall performance as well. One thing that is bugging me is FPS drops during blood moon horde. I am hosting a game on my machine and playing with 2 friends. Every 7 days fps drops to about 15-30 during blood horde. We all have very capable systems running GTX 1070 or better. Here are my current system specs and settings. My goal is to hopefully lessen the blow to fps during blood horde and have a decent balance of graphics quality and performance. Also curious if fps drops would be eliminated if I ran a dedicated server vs hosting on my machine.

I have a beast of a machine with over $2k spent on the cooling system alone. So I will keep specs simple to what mostly matters.

CPU: Intel Core i7-8700k, 24/7 OC@5GHz (up to 5.4GHz stable)

GPU: 2x GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (Anyone have a Nvidia Profile Inspector profile for SLI that works with 7DTD?)

RAM: G.SKILL TridentZ RGB Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) Timing 17-17-17-37 4133MHz

Games are stored of two 2TB SSDs (in RAID 0)

Anyone interested in more info can check out my build log which I quickly threw together.

VSYNC = No (Using gsync monitor. I get about 10 more fps with it off and still no screen tearing)

GAMMA = 38%

-- QUALITY --

ANTI-ALIASING = YES (Enhanced app setting using SLIAA x8 or x16)

TEXTURE = FULL (Cannot change this setting?)

UMA TEXTURE QUALITY = MIDDLE

REFLECTION QUALITY = MIDDLE

REFLECTED SHADOWS = NO

I get a solid 60 fps in single player mode with the above settings even on horde night. It does the microstutter every once in a while especially when using s vehicle but it then jumps back to 60 immediately. Inside or outside doesn't make a difference. I have dumped everything on high and full and to be honest it didn't drop very often then either. The only reason I have lowered anything is to try and eliminate the stutter which appears to be currently impossible. Performance for me though is more than adequate, constant 60 with the odd spike.

Are you playing with others on the BM?
Playing with two friends while being the one hosting the game. Day 7 was alright. Day 14 we decided to take refuge in a cave and layed out a ton of spike traps. I think console said 42 zombies spawnes, but all of us had huge fps drops into the 15s.

-Blurriness when turning rapidly (especially when drinking).

-Often crash.

-Can't play in window.

-ghettochild2600, please buy me a new PC!

Current rig: (I left out some of the less important/relevant specs)....

As far as I know... no SLI. I have never been able to get it to function with 7D2D and over the years searching for an answer has always yielded, "not yet supported".

However, you might get lucky...

I've tried this one before and have exclusive full screen selected in the game start options. I'm going to mess around with nvidia profile inspector options for awhile and see if I can get anywhere with that.

Before when trying to get SLI to work I would get half the performance of a single video card, but now I'm actually seeing improvements.

Didn't try changing SLI bits or anything this time. Just set SLI Rendering to SLI_GPU_COUNT_TWO and SLI rendering mode to FORCE AFR2

Not a huge improvement, but about 20fps gain and you can clearly see both video cards are being utilized.

Its alpha, don't expect much optimizations till beta at least. As for Sli, for sli to "really" work the game has to be coded to take advantage of it, the problem? 99% of games aren't so you often end up with worse performance in sli than just forcing the game to use only one gpu. The drivers can kinda jury-rig sli to work with some games but it still tends to cause more issues.

Yeah it's amazing we're still having conversations like this [about the industry].

I remember posting things like this five years ago.

What is taking developers so long to catch up with hardware?

Is it a lack of communication between manufacturers and developers?

It's not like they can't do it... it's just not happening.

Hopefully five more years from now we won't see another post like this.

Alright after screwing around with this for most of today I was able to get pretty good improvements to both graphics quality and performance.

after2.jpg

Instead of using any built-in Anti-aliasing settings in-game or using Nvidia Profile Inspector I downloaded Reshade https://reshade.me/

I used the following Reshade options:

Colourfulness

Clarity

HDR

SMAA

Lumasharpen

FXAA

Levels

This gave me the best overall settings to my personal taste. I also used Force AFR2 in the NCP and even though I get higher fps in some area's without SLI, I found that overall my average FPS was higher and saw an increase of 20fps in certain areas.

Made some more adjustments and tested 64 zombies in SLI vs SINGLE and performance is better with SLI enabled. Here are a couple more screens. Also added "Levels" shader with custom adjustments.

I think its more because the average user doesn't have a sli setup, so its a waste of dev funds to code a game to use it for the very few gamers that go with 2 gpu's for gaming. I myself don't even see a point to sli, a geforce 1080 can generally get 60 fps on almost anything at 1080p and look great doing it, thats all you need. I don't buy into the whole 4k gaming crap, i've seen it, it doesn't look all that much better. Its just the new gimmick to suck money out of tech junkies, just like sli was. Now if virtually every pc gamer had a sli setup I bet every game would have proper support for it, if the game needed it, thing is, most or even all games have no real need of the power sli can produce.

I notice a huge difference in 4k vs 1080p I even played Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice in 8k using Nvidia DSR and it looked amazing, though only 20-30fps... SLI is awesome when it works. You can even get more than 100% performance increase on some titles a(rise of the tomb raider) and benchmarks. Not everyone has to money for it sure, but it make quite a visual difference if you haven't seen it.

Hey guys, try out alpha 8.8 - 10.5 and tell me how much FPS you have. I don't think your FPS counter has that many digits available :D

Give the 2k/4k mod a try, its very good, easy to install and boosts performance and graphics. Also works with maps already started. Available on mod launcher too.

There is a nexus for 7dtd... I already spent 3 months modding skyrim just to have an update ruin it, but damn if it didn't look amazing. I even took some 8k screenshots that you'd have a hard time telling wasn't real (nsfw). I'll check this out. Since posting those screenshots I've made some more adjustments and it looks even better now. I'll post them later so others can copy it.

Same here. On horde night it drops to around 12 FPS.

I went ahead and put together a compilation of getting 7 Days To Die to look how I have mine setup. Shouldn't take very long. 10-20 minutes. I went through and tested every setting individually to insure performance loss is minimal and graphics quality is nominal. I'm getting on avg 90 fps using a 1080 Ti @2k.

I made a few personal changes to the mods that I felt were a little more balanced.

- HUD reworked

- Vultures, snakes, bears, screamers, and spider zombies have been replaced.

- Item stamina usage rebalanced

- Item stacks are now 5000 units

- Zombies do half block normal block dmg (16 down to 8)

- Backpack now has 84 slots

- Slighly increased experience gain from harvesting and crafting

Edit:

Made a few adjustments and game looks/performs better yet.
