Is directional explosives possible?

I would like to make a type of explosive that only go upward and sideways and not down. I have no idea how to do that or if it is possible, its just that I have a friend that love mining and would love to have some explosives to open up mining shafts. The goal is to keep the tunnels flat but be able to blow away blocks above and on the side of the tunnel.

I can't think of any way to do this in xml - explosions have a couple of properties but nothing that could be tweaked to do what you want. The only thing I could think of even remotely working would be to make a matrix of spreads from a projectile but that would be way more effort than its worth.

Sorry mate, maybe someone else has an idea.
