Is 300th level still the maximum level, or has that gone up?

Hi guys, is 300th level still the maximum level in the game, and if so, what sacrifices need be made.
If 300th level is no longer the max level, what is the max level? Any one know yet?

I didn't check in the game, but according to progression.xml, it's still 300. I wouldn't say any sacrifices need to be made. Even if there aren't enough points to unlock everything now (I didn't check that either), half the stuff doesn't need to be unlocked, so it doesn't really matter.

Just going over my tables, I count 381 total points that have a place to be spent, but unless there are more than three points in addition to your 1 point/level, we would need the level maximum to now be 378, or we go from having 16 points that we could not spend, to having 78 we will never get.

This assumes, of course, that I didn't goof, so there is that.
Perception table.jpg
For the breakdown of this table, it's the Perception tab, with the attribute level on top, with a color coded number of points needed to purchase that level.

All attributes cost just 4 points to get to level 5, but bumping them up to level 8 costs an additional 6 points, and maxing it out, takes 6 more additional points above and beyond that.

Next we see a set of {} with a pair of numbers within, the first in green, the second in red.
Below, we see all of the perk trees under the attribute, and their color coordination tells me at a glance what I personally want/need to max (shown in green), and then further perks that I would like to have (shown in red), and further the perks my personal playstyle doesn't have a use/need for (shown n purple.)

It is possible for a perk tree to only be partially useful/needed, for my own particular playstyle, and the remaining level(s) of that perk to be shown in a different color. For instance, Perception Mastery, up to level 4 is shown in green, but level 5 is shown in purple, because the 5th level of PM, gives a bonus to rifles, which I never use.

Any thoughts or interest in seeing the other five tables?

Right, but how many of those would you need? Do you need every weapon perk? I doubt it. That cuts out a lot of points right there. Do you use every other perk? I never touch animal tracker or cardio or the healing one (and others), for example.

I'm not saying that they shouldn't raise the level. I just don't think it will really impact many people. And even if it does require making some choices, I don't mind that in games, so it wouldn't really matter to me. But if they increase it, that's fine, too.

Ah, I'm sorry that I took so long to edit my message, and your reply came in kinda crosswise to me finishing up my previous post. I haven't worked out everything yet point wise, but I did finnish all 6 tables, just not added them all up yet.

For your particular playstyle, how would you change the table above?

218 'need to have' + 48 'nice to have points'.

Okay, so yours requires 266 points out of 300, so the level cap isn't going to impact you. I'd have to figure it out for myself, but from past experience, I am certain I'm still quite a ways below that as well. Like I said, I don't use a lot of the miscellaneous perks - armor, healing, cardio, pack mule, animal tracking, the two stealth perks, etc. But there are people who use every perk they can except for weapon perks they aren't using. Maybe they would need more points to do that. I'm not sure.

As a side note, if you want a really quick way to check number of points (levels) to get everything you want, I did just release a tool "mod" on here for calculating perks. It would let you run through and mark off every perk you want and see if you have leftover points or run out. It caps at 300 and you can level it to that and then just start "buying" everything you'd ever care to use and see what the results are. Might be easier than trying to figure it out yourself.

Edit: Okay, I ran through my perk calculator and I still had about 140 points remaining. That was with must-have and nice-to-have perks. There are a few other perks I might add on occasion, but wouldn't be ones I'd normally worry about. But even with them, I'd still have over 100 points remaining by the time I have everything I'd want to have.

Is it really needed to have everything? We are still in a state with the game where you are OP af at level 60-70 if done right. Even earlier if you only invest in fighting. And i am not talking default difficulty here. That goes up to survivalist difficulty. Maybe even on insane, but that´s to much bullet sponge for my taste so i don´t know.

@Riamus I also never used pack mule until 2.0, the 25% chance to ignore a hit is just too good early on if playing a STR build.

From progression.xml ...

Code:
<level max_level="300" exp_to_level="10000" experience_multiplier="1.05" skill_points_per_level="1" clamp_exp_cost_at_level="60">

... so 300 is still the maximum level in the game unless you manually change it or use a modlet that changes it.

Ok, so of the 381 places to put skill points, we will now only be able to fill 303 of them, leaving 78 places that cannot be filled?

So we went from v1.4, where we had 16 skill points leftover, and no where to put them, to v2.x, where we currently will have many more places to put skill points, but have no points to fill them.

v2.0 has improved the Armor Crafting progression, but the rest of the changes I will not comment on, as I have not really learned enough to know what these changes have done. I have only played the one multiplayer game, and it has already gone from v2.0, and entered v2.1, and who knows when it will end, or what level my friend and I will reach, and what build the game will be in by then.

Overall, I am cautiously optimistic about improvements to the game, and hope to see more.

That sounds right, assuming your math to get 381 is correct, which it probably is. You can change the max level to 381 in the XML if you want.

It probably didn't cross TFP's mind because they know most players don't play to max level.

Probably, and well said.

For me, being an odd duck, I consider reaching max level w/o dying, as my goal. So far, I cannot say I have ever achieved this goal, but I have hopes that in v2.x, I can eventually do so.

Right now, we get 4 skill points for completing the initial quests, so we have player level +3 for a skill point total. Last play session, I made it to level 199, but since I hit the %$*O&^ wind-blows key and got eaten by the Dire Wolf I tried to hunt, when I get to level 300 this time, I still won't have reached my goal, as that one death makes it a moot point, but I consider it a learning experience, and am looking forward to the next game.

If they made food a bit more scarce you would. That would be nice.

Generally you would start a new game by then. 😁

How do you know when your active playthrough is over and it's time to restart? Is there a final boss or something?

I don't know about everyone, but I usually end up with some new POIs that I'd like to see in the world and playtest, so I restart. Reality also tends to overcome my game, as in work ramps up and I don't get a lot of time.

Whenever you want, basically. For me, it'll be at some point after I've maxed all my weapons/tools. I'll usually keep going for a while because I'll often build some really interesting and large base first once my resources are high at the end game so I don't have to spend much time gathering anything to build it. But once that's done, then it'll be time to start over. Some times, it'll just be that I have seen enough of that map and want to do a new map. Some times, it'll be because a mod is updated and requires a new map and I want to start using the updated mod. In the end, it's just when you want to start over. There isn't any real end game to this, so playing for hundreds of days when you can't progress anymore (max equipment, max level, etc.) doesn't really offer anything to me. I think my longest game was into the 70s on 2 hour days, and most are around 40.
