Improved Water Survival (Empty Jars)

Improved Water Survival (Empty Jars)

We know this is a topic of great interest to the community, and we have taken extra care to listen and read hundreds of posts and polls. What stood out the most is that people liked the old empty jar system for the immersive feeling of rummaging through loot to find an empty jar, locating a water source, filling the jar, and boiling it to drink it safely.

With that in mind, we combined the best of the old and new systems and made it balanced. Here's how it works:

  • In the early game, you scavenge for jars and fill them with murky water from natural lakes, rivers and ditches, or from other man-made bodies of water. Murky water is boiled for use as normal. Toilets, sinks, and other water fixtures are all dried up.
  • Early to mid-game, you can choose to craft dew collectors or continue only to use the jars that you find.

  • To balance gameplay, jars are one-time use, not refunded and are not craftable. The dew collector unlocks at Workstation Crafting level 16, is now crafted on the workbench, and additional resources are required for crafting. Murky water and other drinks still have a chance to be found in loot.

The changes above seem to be a good middle ground between people who liked the realism of fillable jars and the people who want a more challenging survival experience.

I have been keeping an eye on reddit and how they are reacting to the patch notes and aside from endless whining as usual there was a concern that murky water jars would no longer be lootable from toilets and sinks due to the following statements
"Toilets, sinks, and other water fixtures are all dried up" and "Murky water and other drinks still have a chance to be found in loot"
Could we get clarification on that? Also will jars be able to be purchased from traders?

Finding an empty jar in a toilet would feel a little silly, so with "dried up" I guess they mean you can still find toilet paper to wrap your meats in.
But toilets are usually next to cabinets, which could logically be decent sources for all kinds of liquid containers, so the option to spawn in plenty of jars, or even drinks, is there.

Non-recyclable, non-craftable, just go do some quests instead!
RIP my diggeroos :)

What a beauty. /tipofthecap to TFP.

As someone IRL that just collected 1800 gallons in 3 days from an atmospheric river in the Pacific Northwest... I think the dew collector should be changed to rain collector.

1 square foot of horizontal surface area = .6 gallons per 1" of rain.

Dew collectors canopy is 3x3 meters or roughly 81 Sqft. That's 48 gallons of water per inch of rain.

We should be getting a reservior we can take from. 3 jars is just STUPID. Make it somewhat realistic and give me a volume I can draw from. The tank looks like a 55 gallon tank. Let us fill that sucker up as it rains. Just repurpose the same code for batteries charging when connected to electricity to be related to rain events. If this is too powerful move it to end game. I don't even see a point in making a dew collector after I have been playing for a week in game.

THIS is what I want. The dew collector is just DUMB mid game. We should be collecting RAIN!

Empty jars are an uncommon find in cupboards, trash, and vehicles. Murky water is a rare find in food containers/piles and it has been removed from toilets, water fixtures, and sinks. Pure water and teas are a very rare find in food containers.

Mostly you will be getting murky water by filling up empty jars you find or buy at the trader. Very little if any of your murky water will be gained directly from scavenging. Most murky water drops in the game have been replaced by empty jars and there is definitely less of it than there has been pre 2.5.

I usually buy up all the jars a trader offers at each reset. By time you can craft a dew collector (15 forge ahead magazines and needs a workbench) you are more than ready and thankful for it.

I think that is how it should be. Mostly empty jars to give players an extra step in filling them. It gives then a chance to explore for water, provides value to water sources, and makes early game water scarcity a thing or at least better than it was.

Exploring for water is pressing “m” and looking for blue on the map. Early game scarcity is unlikely to be different once optimized. Just like with dew collectors, once players learn what to prioritize in new games water may not be an issue past the first day or two.

But as a veteran of both A16 and A21 experimentals, I expect there to be a ton of complaints from people reluctant to change how they handle new game starts.

great so no crafting water containers. and everyone stopped updating craftable jar mods. about done with this crap.
They updated the patch notes and jars are craftable but you need a crucible. So if you prefer having plenty of jars in the early game you could either cheat in a crucible or alter the recipe to not need a crucible for your game.

Wow, that is gonna be big fun for me. All of my water sources are in the wasteland,
across the burnt forest and the desert. It's at the lowest altitude of my map. Wish me luck.

Its a good change, i am hoping meds and ammo are next. Instead of finding completed loot(medkits and AP ammo) we find the parts to make them ourselves. Since the addition of infested caches i cant remember if i have ever crafted ammo?

What about the water "bubblers" and water jugs? Will those no longer have water? That makes those kind of pointless and an empty jar from those doesn't make sense.
