Humans and or pet companions

They have said no to pets (the drone is your companion) and NPCs will pretty much be limited to traders and bandit/faction leaders and whatever bandit related NPCs they might also add, but none as companions from what the devs have said.

 
 I don't know if it helps you particularly, but there are mods that address these things.  At least in previous alphas.

One of the kickstarter goals they reached was NPC-controlled safe houses, though. Still waiting to hear anything about that.

That's either going to be what traders are (they are safe when doors are closed and they are "controlled" by the NPC traders), or else related to the bandits/factions.  At least, that's my guess.  Not really sure what else they could put in that would make any sense for that.

If I had to guess, it's probably going to end up being the Duke's casino or Noah's compound. I doubt it's going to be the traders, since their compounds kick players out at night. Not much of a safehouse if you can't use it when you need to.

OH I didn't know they addressed that just bought the console version few weeks back so I'm not really in the loop with planned or non planned stuff, sorry

I'd be surprised if they make somewhere you can be safe 24/7.  They've been pretty clear in other things they've done that they don't want you to be completely safe in the game.

I'm not really considering a safehouse to be 24/7 safe (TFP don't want our characters being safe at all lol), rather a place you can stop by and use vending machines, craft, talk to npcs for jobs or whatnot.
