how mods work?

if i launch a server with mods on it do the other players have to have the same mod or will they be able to play with out them provided their base game version is exactly the same as mine say ex 208 will they just download the mods to play with or no?

It all depends on which mods you have. Some mods will push to the client (your friends computers) so they won't have to do anything. Other mods will have to be loaded onto the clients computer for them to work.

What mods are of the type that do not require files on the client? .xml only ?
I was just referring to simple ones. Some only make minor changes. Although there are some that make some bigger changes that still don't need to be on the clients computer. I have put a lot of the newer modlets on my home server and never had to add them to my other computer that I play from. Some of the more complicated mods (one of which is Ravenhearst) need the mod to be on the clients computer. Some have custom icons that have to be added too. It's all a mish mash to me so I may be confusing it more than it needs to be.

If a modlet contains just XML changes, then only that needs to be on the server; no client side installs are needed.

So if a modlet has a Config folder, under Mods/TheMod/Config, and no other folder, it can be server-side only.

However, if it has a Resources folder, then it needs to be client-side as well.

I hope at some point we can load Prefabs from the Mods folder. That'd be really neat to package up and distribute a prefab with custom blocks, all included.
