How far Down can the Zombies Hear?

So, I have built in a Bunker deep underground, I can hear my fires so I assume so can they.
But how much further down can I go before they will not hear me?

I have gone down 20 Blocks and I do not hear anything, but curious if they still will.

I think they can sense you no matter how far you go deep underground if you make enough noise. On horde nights, they will know exactly where you are, even if you are completely silent, and will dig straight down to you.

I assume on Blood Moon night they can hear anything if you are in there. I do not hang out there, I have a base for the blood moons, but this is my main operation base and I try to keep it safe. was hoping if I don't here it then they wouldn't :)

From earlier alphas, 30 m has been the minimum I've used, and they seem to sometimes hear that. 50+ seems good, but you can really only get that under mountains in the current RWG.

And yeah, don't rely on it for blood moon, unless you want to fight in tunnels :)

There isn't any real need to protect your regular base. I don't even close the door on the ground floor of mine. Zombies will not go there if you're not there and if you are there, you can easily kill the few that show up. If you want, you can place traps around the base as well so you don't even have to fight them when they show up while you're there.

Note that if feral sense is enabled, they will show up more often, but are still easy to deal with and still only show up if you're around.

Well, i do kill most of of them as i hear them, but I have a screamer show up daily it seems and she brings the troops in.
If I am not at the base, they don't bother me, I don't leave machines running.
But When I am there, working, they always seem to come around if I am making noises.
I like to dig, in past I built a huge underground chamber, but I never really knew if they heard me or not.

@Redmiller for fun sometime run the tunnels above ground and look for holes running straight down where you have been digging. I broke alot of legs finding out how deep those holes go. Then I fill them up before another Z makes it to my tunnels. I dont need/want any vent shafts

Honestly, underground bases aren´t worth the work. A normal base with a spike moat around it is more than enough. Repairing is also easier than having to constantly fill out the tunnels they keep digging.

Unless you enjoy digging, then go on and have fun.

I had pretty decent success in my A22 underground base + horde base. The important features:
- Main base under a mountain, was about 60 blocks to the ground level. No diggers above, ever.
- Separate horde base, with _short_ open access from "above". I had _some_ diggers during hordes, straight above my fighting position, so I just added a couple smg turrets there. They didn't kill many, but if there's nothing there, over time half the horde will be stuck there.

I've dug out underground areas for an above ground base (including an underground garage) just for fun. I've also once dug a base in the side of a mountain. Everything was level with the ground at the base of the mountain, but was dug into the mountain's side. That also include over 1km of tunnel large enough for a 4x4 to drive through to reach the other side of the mountain. But those are just to have fun. I don't do that for most games.

On non-horde night, I know that screamers can detect heat no matter how deep you are. I mine at bedrock and have a forge and cement mixer underground and often have to fill in screamer holes above them. As far as regular zombies go, I wanna say its something like 16 blocks in any direction, but that may not be correct. I think Eerie Knight did some testing in one of his YouTube videos during the 1.0 update.

JaWoodle recently did a video to find out how far zombies will track a thrown stone. He tested both zombies at ground level and with the zombie up high on a tower. Based on his tests and assuming this correlates to their hearing, it is roughly 25 blocks, linear. As others have pointed out, while it should be possible to hide from them (except for screamers) during regular play, horde nights operate completely differently. Underground bases are perfectly fine, I just wouldn't plan on fighting a horde there.
