PC How exactly does armor rating work

Trying to decide what type of armor to use and really curious. What is the difference in benefit between say an armor rating of 70 vs 50?

I'd prefer to use light armor, but unsure as to how much benefit it provides over heavy armor in terms of defense

It's in the journal tips, it's a straight up reduction percentage. 70% vs 50% for your example.

Light armor (if you have skills) can actually let you tank pretty well.
