How do you prefer to get gas?

I'm kind of leaning toward breaking down cars because you get all the other stuff that you can sell as well as the gas.

At first, it's either scrapping cars or hitting up barrels, but once I get a chemistry station, I'll go to the desert and farm shale until I have around 4 full stacks and then craft my fuel. Then I don't have to worry about running out for a long time.

For a long time now I just wrench a ton of vehicles when out and about; i used to do that, plus mine for oil shale in the desert, but found i never needed oil shale from the desert as i always get more than enough from wrenching

Playing solo, which is what I'm doing lately (my game buddy is taking a break from 7days), I don't give gas much thought. Between scavenging and looting I get enough gas to never have to directly consider how to get more. I'll refill my vehicle when I get back to base and put the rest into storage... and the gas in storage just sits there, permanently undisturbed.

Playing with my friend we'll typically go through gas much faster (no idea why). So at some point one of us will go hit up an oil shale node once, and that'll do us for gas pretty much forever.

Early game, is collect it wherever I can find it, then wrenching vehicles/buying. Finally once I have a chem station I mine a ton of oil shale and turn it into gas.

So the answer is, it depends on where I am at in the game.

Crafting a stack of empty gas cans and then filling them up at the nearby gas reservoir.
Yeh, that would horrible; I much prefer dipping my wrench into the gas tank of a car, and squeezing it dry straight into my backpack.
Funny indeed. I wonder why people get so passionate with jar and container discussions. At the end of the day adding them or removing them wouldn't add/remove so much from the game to where it's become such a major talking point. Am I just underestimating the value of the discussion?

To answer the OP I wrench cars and loot gas stations when I see them until I get into more serious travel like a motorcycle and then I go into the desert and gather shale in large batches to forgo any worry of gas for the foreseeable future. Doing the former will keep you from having to shale run for quite a while.

Umm, let's not turn this into another Jar Tread, sorry for joking about it, but I blame Roland for starting it again! :P
Underestimating? Depends entirely on how you view it, there's half a dozen steps to "the water changes" that I dislike, and no upsides. There are plenty of people who like some or most of it. There's just SO MUCH intertwined stuff involved that it will never be "resolved".

And some of us are just wasting time here anyway, so the amount of discussion doesn't correlate with the importance of a topic.

EDIT: And ok, might as well answer the OP as well:
I usually just buy it now. Unless I'm running a miner build, the shale is rather slow now (which feels ok), and you can get a lot of discounts stacking the "common" discounts (sugar butts, awesome sauce, cigar, barter hat, magnum, cheesecake make for a 60% discount).

Seriously though…wrenching cars until I have a chemistry table and then mining shale.

Usually what I do too. I do like how late gamish you get the choice of gas for quest rewards. I often pick that one if I am low on gas reserves and don't feel like going out to mine and refine my own.

Same. By the time I can make gas, I don't have any need for the extra stuff from cars and I don't bother selling stuff beyond weapons, tools, armor, mods, and magazines/books. And those are just because they fill up storage so quickly. It's also far faster to make gas. Mine for 15 minutes and you can make enough gas to last a really long time. Scrap cars for 15 minutes and you have enough for a couple of days or so unless you happen to find a lot of cars in a very small area.

Before I get the chemistry station I often find myself running out of gas on my way somewhere and then running around finding a nearby car to wrench to get enough gas to get myself to a more populated area where I can wrench several cars to get my tank filled up again. Luckily, even in remote wilderness areas there always seems to be a wreck somewhat nearby.
