How can folks see Iron Shale in the Dessert?

I find that I cannot see Oil Shale in the dessert. I have a really hard time seeing the Iron deposits there as well, what am I doing wrong, or is it that my eyes are just to far gone? Is Oil Shale white for some reason? Here is a shot of the part of the dessertIs Oil Shale white.jpg I have so far uncovered.

Please help me, my adventures await...

Edit:

Is there a place in the code. where the color of Oil Shale is defined? If so, can I alter it so I can see it?

1 - Slate (Iron is more red)
2 - Saltpeter
3 - Lead
And yes, slate should be made more contrasting.
3 is not lead but oil shale. Lead is a more light blue color. Purple is oil shale in 2.0. They changed it from a light brown to purple to make it more visible.

The two purple dots on the left side are oil shale. They changed the color of the oil shale in 2.0

hmm... didn't notice while I was playing the experimental one. I'll have to take a closer look.

Thanks folks! I can now go into the dessert, and finish that Biome. Any way for players to just swap the colors around, Lead (which I don't need) could be Green, for instance, and that would fix my eyesight problem.

Of course I could be wrong, there is no way to check it exactly now. But it seems like you can set the color in the blocks.xml file.

I made the change, but the color on my map is unchanged. Is this file read only when making the game/map?

I also had trouble seeing shale in desert so I used this mod to make changes to map ore colours.

I changed the mod to the colour I wanted...I didn't change the other but could have.

I believe the color would only be changed for areas you haven't been to yet. If the chunks have already generated then they'll have the original color.
Ah, so the already explored areas would remain with purple/Shale, but the newly explored would now be Green/Shale?

I haven't tried this but yes I believe so. That's how other aspects of the map generation work. The chunks generate as you near them using the current information, and then stay that way until they are regenerated either by manual chunk reset or the automatic regen.

I guess that, each time I enter an area, the chunks are re-generated.

I can see them now, and looking at the rest of the dessert I have so far explored, there are a bunch more all over the place.

No, chunks don't regenerate like that. That part of the map display does though apparently. I was puzzled by why you didn't see changed colors in your earlier post. The display color won't change on the map unless you visit that area again. I just tested it. Newly visited areas had new color right away, while previous areas still had old color until I went there. So, it looks like what's displayed on the map will use new information when visited or re-visited. The chunk itself is not regenerated though. Interesting.

Thanks, I was wondering why they didn't change color the first time I looked, but since I hadn't actually went there, I guess it was like the 'fog of war'. Got it working now, and got the Dessert and Snow Biomes complete.

Ahh. Someone pointed out that they were a purple color and I thought it was strange because I remembered them being a British color that blended in, which was why I changed the color to red long ago. This explains it... It is only recently changed to purple.

And yes, if you change the color mid-game, it will not change for areas you had already discovered until the map area is reset/updated.
