Hearing a Bell When Looting

Sometimes when I'm looting I hear a bell sound, (like one of those bells you ding for service at a hotel) and an icon that says Worm with what looks like an open book comes up for a moment.
I originally thought this meant my loot stage was maxed but I just finished the challenges for the Wasteland and claimed the badge at a trader.
I'm looting in the desert at the moment. I have no mods installed.

I could be (and let's face it) probably am wrong, but I too am noticing something, is it possibly the backpack taking a hit? I know there was something like that added in, could that be it?

You are probably wearing nerd armor or you are at least rank 3 in the “Master Intellect” skill. If you hear this bell, it means that you have received two skill points instead of one when you read the magazine. This also applies to magazines that you have already completed.

You were close I think and thank you because I believe you set me on the right path to solving this. I believe this is the bookworm perk in the 2nd level of intellect mastery which increases my chance to find a book, magazine or schematic when looting. Seems odd they would have an icon and a sound when it happens, but it certainly explains why the icon says worm.

This is just normal. For some time I also couldn't understand what the icon was that was flying out and some kind of ringing sound, it wasn't in the previous version. I looked closer and it turned out to be the sound of teeth being knocked out.
