In the past I've made comments about how I've saved nearly every version that has been on Steam.

Many have expressed an interest in also being able to build such a collection but since those versions were in the past it was believed to not be possible.

Recently I was shown this thread (related to another game):

After which I renamed the folder 'depot_251571' to 'Alpha 5.0' and moved it to be with the rest of my collection, cleared all registry and save entries, then ran the app from the folder to test. Working Alpha 5.0, delivered from Steam in 2019.

I should have said Horde Mode sorry. Horde Mode was an alternate game from the main game that was almost pure tower defense. Multiple airdrops would bring supplies, food, and weapons during the day and you would frantically build in preparation for the waves of zombies at night. the waves would get tougher each night. I believe it was removed Alpha 8 so you would have to download Alpha 7 in order to play it.

EDIT: to be clear the path it places the files for you will depend on where your copy of Steam is installed.

It'd be nice if the Pimps made Alphas1-4 available this way also. That was before I knew about the game, so I haven't ever played 'em.

That may not be possible since the pre-Steam versions used a backend auth to their webservices (if I recall correctly).

I do wonder if they can restore the missing Depots though and if they did that would it allow those few missing Steam versions to be downloaded.

 
Could someone please give a short synopsis for each of the major stable branches of each Alpha? Just the major stuff that made each alpha special. For example, which alpha had the best cave system or which was the last before the graphics update. Any insight would be highly appreciated. Thank you kindly.

Makes sense, I suppose. I guess I'd have to find the other saved bits and delete them, too. Seem to remember the location changed at some point - was in AppData at some stage and Documents at others.

It isn't always required. I recommend clearing registry and saves between any major versions though due to the times I have seen errors caused by a registry setting or value in a save that a version did not recognize. Basically if you see an error, clearing registry and save would be the first thing I would try.

Yeah, that's logical, thanks - and I'd just like to really thank you again for pointing this out to us - it has enabled me to download an old version of another EA game that has gone in a direction I really don't like - can't tell you how pleased I am!

I used to love playing this as a 'quick' mini game. As you say tempting just to reload it for that.

 
I'm having trouble running a16.4 along with a17. I downloaded a16.4 and copied it to a new folder, then re-downloaded 17.

The only one that runs is the one currently installed by steam, a16.4 won't run in a copied folder, it just asks me to log in to steam again and then says it failed after I do.

Right now I just went ahead and re-did it with just a16.4, but I'd like to have a17 too just to check the dev progress on updates.
