PC GUIDE: Comparing biomes in A17

Happy to help a bit Khulkhuum :) 'it takes a village' after all :D

hmm... maybe under 3-4 layers of snow? I've dug up a few treasures/quests in snow biome and never hit dirt-clay. Though maybe the chest generation does something? No idea, heh :)

Good to know though since I always thought snow went down x layers and then you hit stone... well, at least I learned something today, thanks Poppatot! :)
Anytime! were you digging on a mountain in the snow? That may have caused there to be more than 1-2 layers of snow?

Mostly flat areas, both in Nav map and my current RWG map. Weird. I just made about 10 test holes in current RWG 4k map and snow was either 4 or 5 layers deep, then either 2 or 3 layers of dirt/clay, then stone. Always 7 layers, then stone. I intentionally tried flats, platues(spelling?), and small flat spots on hills away from the edges. Also tried a couple about 10 blocks from the edge of other biomes, all the same.

I wonder if RWG can change how deep the snow layer is? (scratching head)

Edit: Good to know that there is plenty of clay available in Snow biome. :)

Has me wondering how you'd go about harvesting it... would you dig a ramp down to the dirt lvl then, if it was 2 or 3 blocks, tunnel around some? would 4 or 5 layers of snow falling on your head do a lot of damage in the first few days? Just thinking about using a stone shovel on the first day, no perks. Think it takes 3? swings per snow block? If it is/were 4 or 5 layers of snow then that'd be a lot of digging to strip mine the dirt.

I usually dig out a 10x10 or so area to harvest the dirt needed for cobblestone. So I'd probably tunnel around for the clay. hmm, wonder if the overhead snow would act as insulation/indoors? That'd be cool :) I was mostly "cold" while digging the test holes. And that's with duster, bdu's and full light armor on w a couple insulation inserts.

"Fasten food usage."

The word you want is speeds food usage, or reduces food saturation or something like that. "Fasten" means to attach to.

We always find a TON of vultures in the burnt forest (not mentioned in your guide) and certainly more than "occasional" vultures in the wasteland. Running through either of those biomes usually nets me a flock of them flapping along behind.

The corner-structures in the wasteland, desert and burnt biome usually have sinks that have brass fittings. You can knock the faucet off with a hammer, pick or your stone axe and pick up precious brass.

Burn victims and smouldering wood piles can set you on fire.

Already went deeper into what blocks we have as ground and what lies beneath. Also added screenshots of gravel patches in various biomes. Did you know wasteland ALSO has gravel patches? ;)

Don't know what hit me to use "fasten" XD

Updated info on vultures to reflect it better (wasteland DOES have more than "occasional").

There are no corner-structures in the desert - unless you're thinking those found in the cities. Went around the desert in Nav and didn't see any similar to what you see in wasteland and burnt. Added info about faucets.

Added info on being set on fire.

Updated initial post to simply link to the Wiki Page as updating one place would be more convenient.

Information on realistically found ores underground would be helpful, as digging underground even with the best tools would take hours to verify anything...

Snow biome has about 4 layers of snow and then 3 layers of dirt. The dirt becomes a bit harder to harvest in bulk because of the risk of snow collapsing. It holds up a bit better than sand, but not by much.

Best method i've found to harvest snow biome clay is to just make a giant pit down to stone and scoop out the dirt. Force the collapses once you get about 3-4 overhang tiles deep under the snow by digging out the sides, run away from the collapse, and repeat.

@OP, it's your guide, but one of the main draws of sand for me isn't actually the cement mixer, its smelting it in the forge for glass - either for fragile but cool structures, or just to mass produce 500 jars so i never have to bother finding a water source again. You've listed the benefit of sand as "for use in the cement mixer" but I'd imagine a lot of newer players don't actually know you can smelt it into glass in the forge.

I have deleted the short usage description, as i would have to add them to every invocation of sand. Anyone can just go into the "Sand" page and read more about it.

Considering there are some loopholes in the recipes (on many pages), i will be delving into them also, but will need time for updates. I find it inspiring to work on this and plan to start from the basic materials. Any feedback about that is good feedback :)
