Or you find a forge house. Those are pretty common. One of the things i really like about this alpha. Forge on day one isn´t as easy anymore.

Found a forge day1 at the trader. Cant build anything inside of it of any use until level 20.

Edit: I take that back, I could make a grill for the campfire.

Its probably the idea to first use found facilities, and manage in the beginning in being limited to them.

You can make forged iron to repair the tools you find. I've found fire axes and shovels so far. I also wouldn't get your hopes up too much. Without perks there's not a huge difference between iron and stone.

This is true. This post is about getting to a self sufficiency state of your character. I dont find the new system good or bad. I just wanted to put some raw numbers up for the min/maxers.

Sure but having a forge is not as beneficial as it was in A16. Also resource harvesting is sloooow. It's going to be a while before you have enough stone and iron to do much. I'm also a little more concerned about the screamers in A17. I've done some testing with early horde base designs in creative and the zombies just demolish the typical starter bases. I think the real grind is for the bicycle (or the minibike if the bicycle is too stamina intensive).

Forged iron, iron arrows and glass jars. All pretty important stuff imo. No real need to make iron tools before lvl 20 as they drop pretty easily in loot.

Hit level 20 on day 8. Level 30 by level 10. Really not that big of a deal people.
Agreed. Had the forge up by day 10, lvl 23, and had a ton of fun getting there.

Same day I tackled the hardware store:

3x Iron Pickaxe

2x Sledge Hammer

2x Nail Gun

1x Wrench

1x Hoe

1x Steel Shovel

1x Wire Tool

1x Fireaxe

50+ rebar, 2x Steel Doors and an Anvil.

Just that 1 POI.

i think depending on the type of grind monster you are i think a forge may be remotely possible on day one maybe day 2 if you pushed it :D

Its not that bad, by day 6 on 90 min days I was level 30 without even trying to actually grind. Had a steel fireaxe at level 2, and iron pickaxe by 10 as I finally looted one, then I just bought forged iron/steel off trader to repair it.

Can you steal stuff with land claim blocks still? I have not found anything worth stealing to try it.

The forge is soooo a16, now all the cool kids have TABLE SAWS.

would it be possible to create a mod that uses the old books again?

my idea is if you find a book, its like manual instructions to create the item without needing the level, just have to have the book in your inventory.

the books dont get used up, they just allow you to create the object if you have the book in your inventory. As you level up and reach the level needed to obtain the recipe yourself, you wont need to have the book anymore. This way, there still is a level gate, but if one is lucky enough to find a manual (book) of instructions, you can make the item.

kinda goes back to the old days where one needed to find the various books (i miss those days).

the table saw poi is the best poi. Tons of guns, a potential table saw AND workbench(for the lame kids), and it is made of cobblestone. there is even a hidden cache of tools and guns on top of it.

Too bad i can never find a working forge to try to steal it and see if i can put it in my cabinet factory....

Yep after reading this I am going to move lol. Plus I see in the update notes of this first hotfix under known issues that Table saw is not taught by a perk.
