PC Game crashes my stuff is gone

I came up a ladder at a pass n gas, where I had my base. The game crashes and two storage boxes are gone. This has happened before. I'm taking my wagon and going to the house... will not play this game anymore. It's a great concept but the fundamentals are lacking.

I've had this happen more times than I can count. I decided to stop doing anything with prefabs or keeping my stuff in them. I've been building far enough that I can't see prefabs and it seems to be working fine. But just in case I like to split all my stuff and have a base or storage around a km away just in case so I have back up if the md5 error strikes again

I am assuming you are on Xbox so unable to make back up copies of your game. There is an existing thread regarding this issue which gives you some information about what's happening and what is being done to fix it, as well as a link to a player found workaround, which could help you avoid errors in the future. Be advised though, that the workaround is unofficial and does require you to delete data so exercise caution if you choose to use it. Many players swear by it though. https://7daystodie.com/forums/showthread.php?50175-Known-Issue-Terrain-Rewriting-(MD5-Issue)

Also, if you could give details about your game, specifically what you were doing and where on your map, it might help the team narrow down the trigger for this crash, so it can get fixed sooner. If you could provide your game details using the format shown here, it would be helpful: https://7daystodie.com/forums/showthread.php?47268-IMPORTANT-Please-read-BEFORE-posting

I am level 19 in this game, mining again a narrow path 3 wide, was trying to build a base in a mountain side. The game has gotten so rediculously bad it is not worth playing. I had gone down only about 10 blocks at an angle, no warning, no odd frame rate, the screen went black. When I reloaded everything was gone and got the message your bedroll is missing. No kidding, everything is missing, it always takes the side with all your supplies and work benches. This has happened now on the last 7 games I have tried to play. Usually I get to level 50 though and just before level 51 it does it. Doesn’t matter seed name or terrain location. Would be nice if the Pimps cared about console players too.

The details of your game can matter - sometimes the trigger is something specific in a pre-made location, sometimes it's one object that could be scattered throughout the map. This is why we are asked for this information; the more we provide, the more likely they can replicate the fault and therefore fix it. Unfortunately, this issue does seem to be mostly on Xbox and without the backup facility available, the workaround is your best bet to avoid these errors in the future, which is why I provided the two links in an effort to speed things up for Clare, Ro and the rest of the team.

Hi Guys,

I'm sorry to hear you're having problems with your game. The threads Damsel has kindly linked above provide all the information and potential workarounds the team has at current on the terrain rewrite issue. I'm fully aware how disheartening these issues can be for players but the team are hard at work trying to narrow down and fix each md5 trigger.

Cheers,

Ro

Was a Random-Gen map; Warrior, everything else standard but 18 hour days; single player. All my games are set up this way.

Second base gone

Random gen survival map

Player name Fubar236

Xbox platform

Occurred: 12/17/2017 approx 9pm EST. (game time time approx 4:10 day 160)

Forrest area near large water body. Underground cave / tunnel buildout with above ground fortified tower

Game disconnected to title screen while i was underground at forge/storage

Logged back in to be above ground with 3/4 of the walls, spikes, tunnel and farm missing

Dug down again to see if anything remained below.

King sized bed and desk remained embedded in rock. Tunneled to where 6 crates, forge and workbench would have been, but nothing .... only rock.

Main base (modified prefab Shamway store) unaffected

Lost entire saves before in prior versions. Very disappointed there is still no fundamental stability after years of development. Thousands of steel, iron, rebar not to mention hours of work..... poof

Dont expect any of my stuff back... but can you guys please address game breaking glitches like this before worrying about superficial content

Hi Fubar236,

Thank you for the information on your bug report. If you are not familiar with the information on the MD5 error, there are multiple triggers for this issue which the team are working to track down and remove from the game. It is not yet a completed fix. Our analytics show the number of MD5 errors have reduced in the game with each patch. I know that information isn't of great comfort to players who have lost their base, but there is progress being made.

The team and I understand how frustrating and disheartening this issue is for players and the MD5 error does remain a top priority for the team. So please bear with while we continue to work towards fixing this issue.

Thanks,

Ro

My builds are both in and not in a Prefab, it doesn’t matter. I happens the exact same way, with the exact same result. As I said before last 7 games started have ended this way, usually after level 50 or 51 and it always manages to be the side with all the workbenches and materials. Sorry for your loss.

Hi Bucks902,

Would you be able to provide any details or a bug report on your crashes? The best possible way for us to track down causes of md5 errors is through the gathering of as much information on each cause as possible.

Thanks,

Ro

Xbox 1 game crash and wipe

So, my wife and I love the game and our only real issue WAS that every couple of game days it would crash. We'd just reload and keep playing, annoying but no big deal.

Now, I think we're done with the game. Our previous build crashed and would never load again so we started all over. We made our base in a house with a forge. At around day 50 it crashed and when we loaded it the game had deleted everything in the forge along with our forge chest and half of our garden. We were rather PO'ed but rebuilt only to have it happen again about 15 days later. This thine however it deleted our entire base, just reset out to a crappy old house. I'm done, this game is hard enough without having to start from scratch in the 60's.

Sorry to hear about your problem with the game. It sounds like you were hit by the infamous Terrain Rewrite/MD5 error. This error occurs when the game detects a problem during the autosave process and rewrites suspect files to day one status. A file represents a chunk of terrain approximately 16x16 locks from bedrock to upper limit, thus sometimes a base could be literally cut in half, part still intact, part gone. This is a known problem that the developers are working hard to fix. Unfortunately their are many triggers and although they have managed to eliminate a good many of them, new ones seem to pop up. If you would be willing to provide the details of your game and what you saw just before the crash happened that caused the rewrite, it could help the dev's find another trigger and fix it.

In the meantime, there is an unofficial work around that I have used successfully for the past several months that can prevent the rewrite. Unfortunately it will not restore your lost game, but if you decide to continue playing the game, this is a way to prevent MD5 rewrites.

First of all, every time you shut the game down, make sure you completely shut the game down by quitting, then going to the manage game menu and quitting again (otherwise the game sits in standby and the memory cache is not cleared). This helps with the crashes. Second, limit your continuous playing to no more than 2 hours without completely quitting and restarting the game. (Again, reduces the number of crashes), Finally, if you do experience a crash despite these measures, immediately go to the manage game screen and delete the local save. Make sure you only delete the local save. Then shut the game down, restart and it will sync to the save that the xbox has sent to the cloud (which is usually a loss of about 3 minutes of gameplay. But nothing else.)

Hope this helps.

Hi bobbisgene,

Thank you for your bug report, I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing issues with your game. As sandman has kindly pointed out, there are some unofficial workarounds that players have found helpful while the team continue to work on fixes for these issues. We are constantly striving to fix each issue as quickly as possible, unfortunately it may not be of much comfort to players who have lost progress on their bases.

Thanks,

Ro

Thanks for replying. Good to know the team is still working on a fix and hopefully it will be resolved soon. Really like the game so making stability a priority before working on content is key. We all want a good player experience so content is something to look forward to when we know it won’t all just disappear. Maybe a bit better zombie AI after all that b/c it is easy just to get zombies stuck on terrain and strategic item placement.

Help replicating problem?

I understand when fixing bugs, details do matter but when people report something that happens online and off, self built homes and pre fabs, all different levels and characters you have to understand that asking someone to go through their broken game to look for settings is a bit much. Especially when you see someone reported the exact same bug from the same scenario over a year ago which still hasn't been fixed. Its hard too when it is obvious nothing is really being done to fix the problem or appears that way by the amount of complaints. I will never accept "trust me were working on it" as an acceptable answer for this long of time. As I stated in another post I actually have never publicly complained about a video game on any review site or forum of any sort, and I own No Mans Sky, but after trying to work with this game for some time now I felt I had to voice my opinion. I felt after searching the forum for answers and seeing the responses it comes across as a very arrogant and manipulative group who like to hide behind the "game under development" moniker. I also see the "unofficial" walkaround of wiping your hard drive when the game crashes once every hour doesn't seem to be working. It can be frustrating to feel like you are being put to work by the company you feel ripped off by only to have them blame the customers non complete information or even in some cases Microsoft. If you need help replicating the fault just buy a xbox and turn on 7 days, it will replicate, and your not frustrating an already frustrated customer.

Can I just make it clear that I am not a member of the staff for this forum, a mod, or part of the team behind the game. I'm just another player who's been here a while and occasionally tries to help out other players, the same way players on this forum have helped me out when I've had a problem. Frankly, when I see comments like this, I wonder why I bother.

Hi empoweredword50,

The team and I will always ask for as much information about an issue as possible as it has and may help track an issue from an angle we haven't seen before, that is the reasoning behind asking for information some players might think is trivial but we really appreciate any and all information our community can provide us.

With every patch we have released our analytics show the number of md5's has decreased. The team are constantly working to track down and remove from these issues from the game. It is not yet a completed fix. I know this probably wont be of much comfort to players who have lost their bases etc, but our analytics show the number of MD5 errors have reduced in the game with each patch.

Thanks,

Ro

How is it determined there are less occurrences of MD5? Is it based off less people reporting? I see a lot of people threatening to quit playing, so I just wonder if that could be the reason for less occurrences. I posted about my two back to back MD5s on a thread for terrain rewriting yesterday. I got pretty detailed. I have to wonder if my experience was because of my bunker at bedrock and my base above it competing for write space at the same elevation instead of 55 meters apart. I was driving through the desert once during a crash and reloaded with my bike a few feet below ground. I could see the icon and hear a crashing sound underground so I dug it out. Makes me think something is off with the elevation coding
