Friend can't join party?

Last night friend and I are in a MP game together. 

Done this a million times. 

Today when we got online he's an Ally but there is no invite for party from him or me. it's not going through? 

What is the fix?

We've been doing MP games for years. 

today when he joined my game, we're allies but we're not getting the invite and can't join each other party? 

What is the fix, we can't start over again...what happend?
