Floating 2D planes and block fragements in the air when digging

Linux dedicated server, Linux client Alpha 20.5 (b2).

We are digging out a ditch, just a hole 5x5 blocks wide and deep, dozens of blocks long. And we keep getting these dirt block fragments floating in the air. Some are 2D planes, other are 3D dirt pieces. I can touch them, walk on them. they tend to be long and skinny and one end usually touches the side of the ditch somewhere. I destroy the block they are attached to, and another one pops up to take their place. And some are just floating chunks in the air that can't be destroyed or otherwise removed. Nothing appears in the console

Looks like we just went from bad to worse...we are now seeing through map, and falling into it. This pic is not an excavation - we did not dig a huge hole, it's solid dirt, but I can see through the world, and we can fall through....is my world now toast?

Dunno, but you could try a chunk reset (cr) or, a more drastic solution would be to delete the region file where there are errors.

Also, a log file from the server may hold clues.
