PC Does anyone use the Magazines?

The descriptions of what and how skills and perks works is so poor who really knows what does what. They're just not worth the paper they're not printed on.
And given the nonsensical nature of a 30-minute increase in intelligence, it's just a dumb idea anyway.

What he said

If shotguns did more than 7 f'ing damage I might scrap them for paper to make shotgun shells, but everything is nerfed and broken in this alpha so there's really no point in doing a lot of things that the devs hoped we would be doing. I
Shotguns listed 7 damage is per pellet....they have 8 pellets = 56 damage.

Once you perk into guns they do a ton of damage. They don't do a lot of damage un-perked and non-modded because if they did then everything would die by one shot to the foot lol. Perception + Boom Headshot make a significant difference every level, I had a modded AK that could kill a few cops and a cpl rad wights in one clip, same for the shotgun. Run and Gun significantly makes you move faster while reloading, and the gun spec perks add significant benefits.

Well... Someone worked hard on these, so I have to imagine that their value is worth that effort.

However, we don't know what the big picture they had in mind was when they made these. If we did maybe we'd get that lightbulb over our heads :)

That said, sorry to say I've never used one. Sold the few that made it, inventory space wise, to the Trader.

& not to beat a very dead and buried horse, but :) These would be perfect for a, 'Gather/Rummage Sack' -additional- Storage space; only a handlful of slots, only very light weight items alllowed. So 10 Goldenrod wouldn't take up a regular backpack slot. just sayin :D

I haven't really used those magazines with the temp buff/perk yet. I always end up saving them for some "purpose" for later, but then never use them. I know lot of people sell them too.
Does anyone use these? and how do you use them to best advantage? does the perk many a big difference in any cases of note? Please tell me your thoughts on if I should use them, or sell them, or scrap em.
Same for me

It depends, glasses+magazine is +3 int, which also allows you to learn perks that require that much int once you meet the lv req, so technacally you could use this to save 3 skill points, as there is really no reason to always keep your int maxxed, as it mostly effects stuff like crafting and the trader. I tend to keep my int 2 below my lv cap, and just use the glasses to gain that 2 I need when I need it, to save 2 skill points early game. Depends how much rng loves me though i've gone day 14 without finding the glasses once. Most people once they get a base don't really craft much on the fly, and if your like building a base you could put the glasses on for craft speed. Though the lucky ones might be better depending if its a double int level with craft speed or not.
Magazines I use the most and I hold onto are: master chef, I keep lv 1 in the perk, if I need to make veggie stew, I save up mats to make a ton of them, pop the magazine page and then queue em up. Again this is mostly to save skill points early game (below level 100) when they are much more tight.
Does it meet the requirements for leveling up a perk though? I had expected the various goggles to let me raise skills at new cap and that didn't seem to be the case.

In my opinion the magazines are a cheap attempt at making bookstores/ book loot have some long term purpose after removing the original schematics system. I don't think there was anything wrong with the old system, where after a while you would not loot bookstores anymore and move on to other loot locations/ sources. It just doesn't work for me. I don't like fiddling around with magazines and planning to carry some around for specific situations. If I unlock a skill I want to keep a skill. And keeping them for trading isn't that great either because again inventory management and rather low profit. At least they left in the option to scrap them for paper.
The bookstores have the same longterm purpose as always; bulk paper for shotgun shells.

Although uneeded books did sell for a lot more than the magazines did so were better trader fodder too, but late game A16 was a lot about care and feeding of shotgun turrets for me.

Yeah whenever I get them I hold onto them just to sell for some quick dukes, unless of course I find something a little more worthwhile(most things being in that category).

Bulk paper ultimately was made in the chem station, when glue wasn't the new brass yet. But this isn't about a paper source anyway – could just boost stacks of paper in the loot instead of making us tear up dozens of useless magazines.

It's about getting something worthwhile from bookstores throughout the whole game, that's relevant to your character progression – That was the role bookstores played primarily – A source of friggin knowledge. I suspect magazines (next to the silly one-use schematics) try to adress that and they currently fail to do so, from what I can tell from the responses here. Which is why I suggest to remove magazines and replace them with books that give permanent xp, instead of a buff that makes 1-2 skillpoints difference and requires you to plan inventory space, attributes and doesn't even friggin stack.

Both in terms of stacks of the same type of magazine in the inventory to save space and same magazine effects stacking to get more than one level of a perk with them. If that was changed, I might use them, but I still think temporary perk unlocks just make it a needlessly complicated alzheimer's simulator. When I unlock a perk or skill, I want to keep it.

Well said.

I'm on the same boat as some others here.

For me, they are simply not worth the inventory space. I either use them instantly, usually not even reading the description or sell them if I happen to have extra space in the inventory.

EDIT: Well, if I were to do something to the magazines, I'd make them have more useful "generic" effects. A good example would be a 30-60min XP multiplier or straight up a free skill point or something (obviously this would have to be a true rarity).

XP multiplier is a good idea for a temp buff indeed. But I think we have that with "Grandpa's learnin' elixir" already.

If they gave a free skill point (instead of xp as I suggested), then you'd end up with more un-usable skill points when hitting the level cap. Can't decide whether that would be good or bad... :D

Good: A means to cut the grind to level 300 shorter.

Bad: Taking away the reward of achieving max level.

I thought the magazine's where the old gun parts so I've been hording them!
That's the new schematics.

Some people play beyond their skill level and die a lot so it would be useful for them to negate the death debuff but that's really situational so pretty worthless overall. As someone said earlier, if you need these to boost important stats like int you have bigger issues.

I'm finding them useful. It's like renting skills for free (only the ones you have available to buy)Basically I use them for those skills to which I dont put points.

farming? read magazine of miner 69 or mother lode ...

looting? From the shadows, hiden strike, skull Crusher, sexual tyranosaurus ...

؟why not? its free.

Personal experiences,

I read the better barter before going to the traders,

or read living off the land to make seeds without spending that point.

Just other day in mp server buy in trader the Grease Monkey magazine, why? beacause I still need another point to make the bike, and I didnt want to wait.
I think this kind of use, is the most obvious "good" way of using the magazines...

It, however, does not change the fact, that Im not going to waste my time with this micromanaging.

So I just use them as soon as i find them, and otherwise pay them no mind.

But they DO have a use, even if its a bit boring...
