PC Dirt to grass?

I always flatten out hills surrounding my base so I have a clear view of my surroundings. Unfortunately, this also leaves me with a clear view of massive dirt spots. Is there any way to turn those dirt blocks back into green grass, without digging it up and actually replacing it with grass blocks? I've tried tilling it all and placing water next to it, in hopes that it would become lush again, but no luck.

 
Go to dirt, then recipes. Grassy, forest, and the other one will grow grass eventually after the block is placed. Tilling the dirt just ensures grass will NEVER grow...

 
I know when I used to play before this summers updates, regular dirt used to sprout grass again by itself, as long as it had light. Did they change it?

 
I've had an odd piece of placed dirt grass again after clearing but not for some time. I usually clear the existing grass around my base and have never had it grow back.

I think it takes time. Probably need to leave that area and let it grow. Kinda like trees. Planting them they randomly appear in a couple days. Shocked this game doesn't have a sickle. Give it a 4 square cut or something.

 
I recently crafted plains dirt to fill in gaps around my base where I dug to much. By the time I placed the blocks around the perimeter and got back where I started the grass was already growing so that confirms it still works.

A sickle or scythe for mowing the grass would be great. Taking them out one by one is a pain and while shooting clumps of them with exploding crossbow bolts is a lot of fun, it does use a lot of resources.

 
Thanks for the replies. To be clear, I’m not asking about grass fibers. I was wondering if plain dirt from clearing out a hill, would eventually become green again. Apparently I have to dig it up and place different blocks according to what unsentsoul is saying.

Yes that is correct, just figure out which you want, depending on he dirt/biome and if looks matter lol.
