Did Zombie Hearing Get Upgraded In 2.0?

Please forgive me if this is something that's been answered in the past, but I've noticed that zombies seem to have super hearing in 2.0. It used to be if you were a certain distance above or below the zombies (and Screamers) they wouldn't be able to hear you because you were either too high up or too low down. It didn't matter how much noise the player made. But as of 2.0 I've noticed that distance no longer seems to matter. If a zombie is close to the location and the player makes any type of noise, the zombies will automatically hear the noise and proceed directly to its location.

Is this a thing, or did I just have some special zombies doing some special things they shouldn't have been doing?
 
Thanks very much for answering. So they're only supposed to have increased hearing during storms and no other time? I don't (and probably never will) play with feral sense on.

It's not your imagination. Someone will probably find the XML entry for you, but I'd guess it has something to do with the change that brings every zombie in the neighborhood down on your neck when you stop anywhere and you have to take them down before you can get to work. I asked about that at some point, but didn't get an answer. Saw the answer in passing in a completely different post on a completely different subject.
