Wait just one second! Is this the beginning of a plot??? Now THAT would be scary!
If it is, you need a new stat: Sanity. Just as critical as health, maybe more so... :)
Now that would be an interesting mechanic to try and program although there'd be a damn good chance you couldn't do it justice.

And if you are about to explain how this is going to make crafting skills useless: Nope. Way ahead of you. Way ahead and far out.
Crafting used for procreation confirmed in A17

I love the idea of books been ingredient. But I still prefer to have books been read, and then improve your efficiency, maybe in time ? Like you have to read one book to know you can actually craft it, then read more to craft as ingredient, and then it reduce the build time with every build, as you start to learn how to do it. the more you do more faster you build it.
I interpret Gazz "way ahead" comment that weapon crafting skill is still used to determine the quality. With your idea the crafting skill would be useless.

Not that your idea is bad, but advancement then depends only on RNG. The other way has the advantage of having two "adjusting screws" to adjust progression of the placer character, the books AND the skill.

Just so I'm clear. If I want to build a second pistol I have to have a second book?

... if books are not really being used as knowledge anymore, but just as ingredients, why not just make it a separate ingredient? One that makes sense? Like the spring?

Because when Madmole said “July” I assumed that the then current state of the game was going to be polished up and released as experimental but then the update issue happened. I didn’t realize at the time that they were going to finish up so much more before releasing. All the work they have done since the update has since trivialized it’s impact. I commented back when they were still working on the fix and faatal commented weeks later after enough work had been done.

One reason is that books are a more random find and are specific to the weapon being created. All the other ingredients are generic. Finding the pistol book won’t let me craft an AK-47 so I need to keep searching for that book. If all the ingredients are generic components and all the recipes are just a shuffle and recount of those same generic components then there is less of a quest feel for that specific component needed for that specific weapon you wish to make.

I think there may be other things that Gazz has planned that make more sense for the ingredient being a book rather than a spring which is, itself, just a type of mechanical part already represented in the recipe.

I hope so because it's weird.

You can make weapons specific ingredients that aren't as weird as a one shot consumed book.

I also hope the code is still in for us to be able to reverse this weird decision.

I'd hate for the idea of books as a method to gain knowledge being removed entirely.

So... basically going back to using "gun molds" (interchangeable with gun book in this scenario) like in earlier alphas except consumable? (before my time, so I can't speak from other than the videos I have seen)

There ya go. Perfect. Casts that break on use. Make it happen Roland. It's less weird. =)

Would love to hear that design idea. Books as core ingredients has been done in games in the past and it always seemed to be cheesy.

I mean.. who burns the directions after it's first use? Maybe I'm not manly enough for this type of crafting. I like asking for directions... :-D

The game, Don't Starve does a pretty good job of it.

*** 7D2D could have phantoms attack you until you die or get some sleep or use some item.

***Also, if your sanity is high, you don't here the sound effects in the wasteland.

This would be why I never bother with guns, my plain, simple Bow and Arrows does the job for me.. I am very confused at this point how putting together how guns would work in A17... Just sayin' :confusion:

Assemble guns using a workbench I would guess.

The rate of fire can make a difference once things start running.

Schematics? First one= learned skill, second and so on = money at the traders. ;)

Usefulness depends on how you look at it. Traders helped out a lot, before that, scraping it and using it for something else was still good.

Too may guns? Again it depends on how many guns you could sell. Or if you really needed the iron could scrap it. But it you want to throw them at zombies you go ahead. lol

Different things with the same recipe? Naaa! Who would want that??? But really, that sounds great.

I'm ok either way with spam-crafting but at least it was one thing that kept you busy at night when you can't sleep.

Don't worry Gazz, you are so far out there and I mean sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo far out there, that most people don't even know what your saying. ;)

By the way... this is the first post that you are making sense.... OK, who are you and what have you done with GAZZ!

LOVED the pie.

that bring to exploiting that mechanic for fertilizer :)

imho generic ingredients are way too common

books are pretty rare to find so we couldn't mass produce gun

Agreed. But there are less weird ways to do it.

Book burning being advocated by a teacher... For shame Roland.

Speaking of traders, I'm all for removing them entirely. Getting all geared up by day two because you sell all your crap is just a cheap cheat.

You lost me here Roland. If I build something, I build it out of the parts that I need. I read the instruction manual or book to do so. I don't make it out of the book. That would be silly.

Gazz make sense??? Have you met Gazz or read his post over the years???

As of yesterday, bedrolls are now stored in the player persistent data, which has online and offline players, so sleeper volumes now check that and it can see all bedrolls. Land claim blocks are also stored in that persistent data and checked by sleeper volumes.
Thanks Bud,

Read the next few responses as well with Xeen…..Makes sense now and more realistic that if you clear a POI and secure it, that Zs WILL NOT spawn in that POI .

Regards

Ouch

What is the problem now with A17? Last time I was on here was in July and I thought it was getting released around then. This is crazy after all these years the devs still cannot release something with a reasonable expected date.

You missed the post where tfp said anytime someone says the word "crazy" on the forums, it gets delayed another week.

Damn. Now that's two more weeks...

Hey, I think it’s weird too which is why I quipped pages ago it’s like consuming a glass bottle when making cornbread. We’re just jar smashing instructions burning dudes of the apocalypse. I was just giving an answer to “Why not a spring?” but agree there are alternatives to books to make recipes unique.

To me, it’s not a huge deal as guns are plentiful in the world now. I probably won’t even spend the point on the skill that allows me to craft weapons in the first place. Save that for something else.

I have no idea whether the action of “reading” will still be in the game to be used by modders. Hope so.
