when's the last time you ducked a swinging frying pan? ooops <looks back over shoulder> :)
Lmao did you get a look at her before she swung? I would've been paralyzed by attraction. :D role plaaaayy night!!! :p

Sorry; hope I'm not steping on toes. <looks back over shoulder>

Hoping one of these days we will see a nice new cast of zombies that are special. Similar to games like Resident Evil or Left 4 Dead. Always liked the idea of a zombie that clings to walls and ceilings and waits in POIs for players then leaps at them. So a mix of Hunter (l4d) and a Crawler (Killing Floor).

@Roland A question about:

*Random Maps assigned a "county" name for multiplayer server games in order to hide the actual seed name.7/24/18

I remember a discussion a while back about there being no difference between multiplayer and single player games now so will this also affect local games with only one person playing? Note: I hope it does. I've wanted to play two different SP games in the same seed for a long time but in earlier Alphas that has always been kind of a pain to keep track of.

Is crossbows fixed in alpha 17?
Yes.

roland is all the new poi s are in dungeon style? .. take your time iam not in a hurry .
No.

A couple of related questions to do with character progression...

  1. I gather that the basic progression system is still:

    Do <variety of stuff> -> gain xp -> increase in level -> get given points -> spend points on perks

    Are there still some active skills that are increased more directly (like Athletics or weapon skills)?

    Do <specific activity> -> increase skill

  2. What about the ability scores (Strength, Dexterity, etc.)? Do they increase through action? Do you spend points on them? Or something else?

It is mixed. There are the attributes and they are advanced by spending points. Each gain in attribute carries a direct benefit. So spend a point in strength and you unlock some inventory space in your backpack. Spend a point in agility and your stamina increases above 100 (up to 200). Spend a point in Fortitude and your HP max increases above 100 (up to 200). etc. Every point you spend carries a direct benefit for you in the game and is a bit agonizing to decide between.

Each attribute then has 2-3 overarching skills related to them that are not advanced by purchasing but are instead advanced by doing. So these would include things like scavenging, mining, etc. and when you reach certain benchmarks in their progression you will get a benefit and certain perks will become unlocked and available for purchase.

Within each skill there are a few perks related to that skill. Some of them are not available to purchase until you reach a certain level within the skill. Like the attributes, the perks are purchased using skill points and each perk has a number of tiers for better benefits.

The whole system is way more polished and organized than before and completely moddable. So it should be possible for modders to add more attributes if they wanted to go for the classic D&D ones (for example) and create skills and perks within those categories. I know I didn't give examples of all the attributes or specifics on perks and skills but that is all I will say about them as you should discover them for yourself.

  • With the new Food/Water/Health/Stamina system there is no more "Wellness". What happens when you die?
Death penalty is something I'm not completely sure about neither has a dev commented on it so I think that should be unknown for now. I will say that they can do whatever they want with it. They can make it as punitive as they want and they have lots of options to punish us with.

i dont want them to be all over the place. coz as far as i know, there must be a boss in each of them.. so if its every where iam going to have ton of good loot . if bosses dont drop good loot . this will be disappointing
I believe that bosses are only present when you are doing a quest. A quest will hijack a POI and populate it with the zombies and, if applicable, a boss that is needed for the quest. So you shouldn't be running into bosses at every single level designed POI you come across.

in a 16.4 you can sneak around with a bow or crossbow in hand. the center of the eyeball and the arrow point will be lined up. after a while, you will notice that the arrow and the eyeball will start to drift apart, so if you aim by the arrow instead of the eye, the arrow or bolt will fly wide. hence aim drift. it was brought up last year as a bug that was never really addressed.
sneak around about 5-10 minutes of active shooting. swapping weapons would usually fix this, but not good when say facing a horde to unnecessarily swap
First of all there is no more eyeball to drift away from the crosshairs and secondly the crosshairs themselves have been overhauled to be dynamic and integral to aiming. There is a HUGE difference between shooting from the hip and switching into iron sights mode. For one the crosshairs is always present now. It doesn't disappear as it once did when going into ironsights (which is ironic to my mind...). The crosshairs will shrink and enlarge now based on the weapon type and whether you are taking the time to aim. Whatever the size of the crosshairs it represents the spread of your firing cone and your shots will RANDOMLY land somewhere in that cone. So if you are shooting from the hip as you run the crosshairs will be huge and only one shot in many will hit the zombie in the head. But if you stop and go into ironsights the crosshairs shrink down really tight so that its area is completely within the circumference of the zombie's head and then every shot should hit the mark.

I never noticed any drift while playing but that sounds like a longterm issue anyway that might not emerge until there are thousands of players putting dozens of hourse into the build. We'll see once experimental hits.

if memory serves (as spock would say), i do believe there are different types of night scopes... infra red (grainy) and there is assisted (star light night scopes and grainy also), and then there is the digital that gives the clearer bluish view. i used the star light scopes when i was in the military, these were not the preferred ones to use in total darkness as the name implies they do need some light source to be effective. the ones in game tend to remind me of the star light ones.
You're talking about the Gen I stuff, popular during Vietnam. They used ambient light instead of an infrared lighting source. Fast forward to Gen 3 and 3+ with auto-gating... Now you're cooking with fire :)

The ones in-game appear to be crappy Gen I's though I'm not sure it was on purpose. You WOULD expect much better definition given the amount of ambient light on most nights.

I believe so. You are correct that there is no distinction between SP and MP and when you play on your own computer you are still just playing on your own private server so I would expect that all the benefits Kinyajuu listed in regards to the county name would apply to people playing alone on their own computer.

New stuff

@Roland

I saw somewhere that in a17 we will be able to summon boss zombies with a quest paper

Now as a Mod I want to ask you if it's true or not will we be able to summon entities with a quest?? because that would be awesome

+ players in our server are asking for auto doors like auto turrets which they will open when they see you and they will closed by their own or by a controller

+ the Campfire AOE which has heatSource buff is very useful if only there were more of those or something that we can use like +heatsource1 heatSource2

for example <property name="ActiveRadiusEffects" value="+heatSource1(3)"

which wouldnt had the same effect of campfire so we could define other effects on it , I can make tons of new mods using it

+ maybe it's nothing but it would be very cool to have an item like sword or katana

I mean these are suggestions but it would be very cool to see these

Has the lighting (light fixtures) been fixed so if we put more then 10-50+ up and it won't bring us to our knees at 10 FPS... also experienced FPS loss when painting multi textures in an area.. pressure plates also caused FPS lag..... has gardens been fixed??? and last but not least.. are we able to blow things up without having the voxels lag out the whole server yet? :)
Unity is working on some new lighting tech, so hopefully that will help in the future.

The rest of your questions are probably a no, except voxel updates might be a bit faster.

I'm very very beginner level when it comes to modding so your questions are a bit beyond my knowledge. A quest will hijack a POI and populate it with a boss and whatever zombies are pertinent to that quest. I believe that this is something that will be able to be modified via xmls but I'm not completely sure.

Auto doors most likely won't be in A17 but will hopefully be in A18. Prime said he MIGHT be able to get enough of the hooks for it added in that modders would be able to do it during A17 but he wouldn't make promises. His main priority for A17 is quests.

AOE properties is something I'm not familiar enough with to be able to comment. Sorry. AOE is just an acronym to me. Can I even say "AOE properties"? Sounded good but I have no idea...

No sword or katana or spear weapons that I could find in A17. Sorry. Those are not secret features. They just don't exist. I suppose it is going to be machete and Sillls shovel-tech for the foreseeable future....

In general terms in your opinion, what needs to be ironed out before the 7 day hordes can attack?
I've made a few changes required for how the new pathing grid works, but need to finish testing and tweaking horde distances and angles.

Area Of Effect. Campfire has an area, pipe bombs have an area, etc.
