Sorry. I know I said “graphics” but that was an over simplification. They saw that there would be performance gains by updating to Unity 2018 and then again most recently to 2018.2.
The performance gains is what they were primarily after with the side benefit being that the visuals would also get a bump. It has been a mostly smooth transition but (as Madmole explained) some of the shaders have caused problems which has in turn caused a delay and made the game visually unfit for a video by Madmole’s standards.

In their estimation the performance gains and enhancements of the newest version of Unity justified the change even though it carried a risk of delay as it would mean a better running A17. It was a call they made and now they are working through the result of their choice.

As for feature freeze, they have not added any new major features since the freeze. All developers have been working to finish up and debug the features already implemented. There are still features of A17 that have not been talked about. If I were to reveal one of those right now it wouldn’t mean new features were added after the freeze.

I’m not going to reveal one right now.
OK howa' 'bout now? :) Cheers ! I know these are rough times.

Or you could forward him the info and he could voluntarily sign up? No one needs an invite, its open to all who qualify.
I will send him the info, but with the millions of followers he has, if he streamed a17, it would reach an awfully lot of people that wouldn't know about this. I think Joel would have a better chance of getting him than me. I'm just saying it would be great for the game...after Ninja (10 million followers), Shroud (3.5 million) is top twitch dog.

Wow, I did not know he played this game. Incredible
yep...and Shroud loved it. His friends loved it too. They played vanilla at first to learn then played Starvation. I kept yelling at the video every time he made a noob move. Funny stuff. Shroud streamed for a week instead of his usual pubg.

Shovel spears

Shovel spears or a shovel being used as a spear works surprisingly well as a weapon. I started out using a stone shovel which looks sort of like a spear. Then worked my way up to iron ones.

Using a shovel as a spear looks better and gives the player more options.

When the shovel is used as a weapon, you have a slightly better range than any other may melee (non ranged) weapon. So you can stay out of a zombies attack and better at avoiding getting hit.

This is best used against crawlers zombies and snakes. Up until now there was no real way to fight against snakes since it was nearly impossible to hit them with a ranged weapon and attacking them with a melee was exposing you to get hit both badly and repeatedly. The best thing you could do was to avoid them.

For walking zombies. I find that it is best to aim for the neck since this is more likely to stun them. Plus you have a good chance to hit them in the head.

The tradeoff is that like the stone ax, the shovel is a tool and does do as much damage as a spiked club but it's slightly better ranged makes up for it. Naturally an iron or even steel shovels would work better do to the material used.

As with all weapons, the player needs to practice to get better but it has a short learning curve and it won't take long for the player to pick up.

On the down side, the shovel is not the best to be used against aggressive animals like the boar, since they have a different type of attack of ramming the player. I tried it once with a stone shovel and got my ass handed to me by one very quickly and got gored to death. I only tried this once with a stone one and may have faired better if I used hit and run tactics. Instead of going head to head with one. Lesson learned.

Can be more useful in Alpha 17 since improved AI makes zombies more effective at attacking.

So to summaries, shovels used as spears:

Have the best range of all melee weapons.

Have a different angle of attack.

Better at taking out crawlers.

Much better at taking out snakes by far.

Better at stunning walking zombies if you aim for the neck.

Help you even more in next Alpha.

Not good for attacking animals like boars.

Have only average entry damage.

Note: Steel shovels not tested.

Let me know what you guys think. :)

They never said beta after A17, heck even this thread says bandits are being done in A18.....
They never promised beta after A17. But there was some talk from madmole and roland and some rumors that they were trying to get as many features as possible done to get to beta. This was several months ago.. right after the A17 development begun.

They probably have changed their minds because of the amount of features they want to add (: I am actually happy with that.. the more things, the better! no rushing

I was looking at page one and saw the "county" name generated to hide map seed name for servers part. Just curious why someone would want the seed name masked.

Aloha

New guy here, so a big thanks to the people that created 7D2D - 444 hours spend already and counting. And with that out of the way, here are my 2 cents on the situation.

These past few days, it's become a routine to visit these forums in anticipation to the release of A17. It's like mandatory military service all over again. When you start, you know that it'll eventually end but you are too occupied with what's in frond of you to bother about it - you just have to go through it. The closer the date to you getting it over with comes, you get to spend more attention to the time going by that it seems longer. Yet you know for a fact that that moment will arrive. The advice that was given to us was to try and stop thinking about it. It's so simple and yet so hard, but it works. So is A17, it will eventually be released.

Now, I don't know how the Fun Pimps do things since I joined sometime in A16.4, but I hope that the content will take priority over a faster release. As an example I give you KOTOR 2 and TSL:Restored Content Mod.

p.s. English is not my native language (I'm Greek btw) so if something feels off, it is probably my fault :p

So that on a pvp server you can't use the seed name to scout out resources and difficulties before you join.

So MP cheesers can't spawn the map in the generator to see where juicy POI's are.

EDIT: Beaten by Gronk like its the AFC Championship again...

I forget how long ago and can't remember when but they talked about A18 long before this was added to the first page. Or does it not count unless it is on the front page?
As far as I've known, there was always an A18 after A17. Then A19, Beta1, Beta2, Gold. But, this was just a general list of waypoints subject to change. Where did I read it? Don't remember, and I'm far too lazy to hunt it down, especially if it was in a Disqus comment on Joel's blog. Would I like to have the update yesterday? Yeah, sure, but I'd rather have it ... "done" (although I'm leery of using that word) Until then there are about 30 mods you can play with to keep things "interesting". Or, even play another game.

Edit: 5370 hours so far, and probably another 4-6 today too.

It might even be Beta after A18, but who knows for sure?

He's not from the U.S. He doesn't get the reference.

If there ever is an apocalypse, I pray I have the fortune to be around people like Jax, Guppy, Khaine (and so many others) who will be proactive about finding things to do to help themselves and others, and hopefully not so many people sitting around a campfire they did nothing to help build complaining about how hungry they are.
"It took you 8 hours to bring us a rabbit? Why can't you bring us a bear in 4?"
You forgot to add: "I've killed and eaten at least three flies while I sat here at the fire. Y'all are lazy bums."

The reason I asked, in a prior post, about the cell size is because I was trying to generate those

parameters now, the cell parameter makes the difference. If releasing the two numbers, that i mentioned,

is not allowed, at this time, I understand.

When I listened to the stream with Fubar_Prime and Kinyajuu, what I had gotten from it was that the size

reduction not only helps performance prerequisites, but also allows for muliple copies of the seed to be

generated/saved simultaneously, then allows the option to emulate Navezgane POI placement.

For single player

that means if you find the right landscaping preference for yourself you can do different custom layouts,

in each iteration/copy, after initial generation. Or produce a flat plane first, place POI clusters and special

prefabs, save file, then generate different landscapes, and use that file to populate your instant custom/preferred

layout.

For server owners

they get the ability of single player, plus can place as many replicas as their server can handle

Each can have a duplicate layout, or differentiate in theme, allowing for the same capacity, without necessarily

going into the modded section. The only difference is that everyone will not automatically be spawned on a single

planar surface, but be spawned in a different I think he called them counties, it may have been counters I relistened

but couldn't make out. The rendering would be better regulated per individulal client, because of the reduction of the

overall distance from 0,0, yet volume could be scaled by simply replicating and placing new file.

Mentioning a single game as a reference Dark Souls 3, seems huge because of the DLC addons, but each area is a controlled

resouce generation arena.

For the modders they get step 1 and step 2, but will eventually figure a way to link the different play fields,

creating a true clan or faction separation environment. Think of the PVP/PVE invasion possibilities. Modular arena placement,

added expndability.

The defining/underlying factor is always the rendering capabilities of the Engine. Like I posted once before imagine

trying to reproduce the datathroughput of a "catscan" on a PC.

Reading the Dev/Roland/Joel/Joe posts this is what I received. May be wrong, but if not then gaming is in for a helluva ride.

watched G4K use the shovel many times..lol

can take the head right off a zombie. one shot.

levels up your skills while doing it too . i think its mining skill ??

Dropped Features:

Behemoth

Ziplines

Plains & Maple Forest as full and distinct biomes

er....Blimp... 7/24/18

bandits officially postponed to A18 7/24/18

Ok you got me interested for A18. Hopefully that includes survivors and not just the bandits. Also hopefully traveling traders. Game lacks life...though I get why but still those three things will make a nice change. Especially if you hate multiplayer.

Have you played the newer Farcry? I think you would like it. You can equip an arsenal of shovels and use them as throwable weapons; and they fire straight and fast like a laser beam obviously immediately killing your opponent.

I could be persuaded for a Batman avatar, looooooooooved those comic books when I was a little boy :)
They are actually free everywhere on the interwebs, so not a big investment.

It think it would be cool if everybody used one for a while. Not sure how the trend got started, but I like it.

If that's true, which I believe it is, that's awesome. Will be testing this out next time I load up the game. Cheers!

Actually your English is pretty great. Also great advice, and good points.

@gamida
You keep being misunderstood I think...

I think you bring up a valid point... We have always assumed the 8 player max was for 8 people on the server at once, period, when in reality, it's 8 OF THE SAME PLAYERS on the server... Same 8 people, no swapping out

That is a big paradigm shift, and leaves the concept of open servers useless.

This map size would indeed allow 8 of the SAME players an opportunity to loot to their hearts content, but would definitely stifle looting on a server with 8 players where the 8 were made up of 30 people who were on and off again at different times.
(I miss reading one day and I am so far behind.) I hadn't thought about this. I was thinking smaller map no biggy. But then I didn't think back to my server days when it was nothing for our server to have 1000+ people join it in the first month after a wipe....especially when new alpha came out. I can see popular servers like that having some major issues with the map. :(
